There is no wall today because past administrations gave Democrats what they wanted -- first. Then Democrats renigged -- since the 1980s.

This call by Democrats to open the government first, and then discuss border funding, is just another disingenuous compromise effort.

The Chinese built a wall thousands of years ago, and now they have no problems with South & Central American immigrants invading China.

We have immigration laws. It's not up to either Obama or Trump to decide which ones he likes and which he doesn't. Both parties have had complete control (i.e., White House, Senate and House of Representatives) in recent times and have failed to change the immigration laws. Thus they remain unchanged. Our immigration policy must follow the law. People who entered the country illegally are not undocumented immigrants. They're not immigrants at all. They're illegal aliens. Trespassers.

Some argue that it's not fair to send them back. But what about the people who would like to become immigrants to the U.S. and have followed our laws? They went to the nearest U.S. Embassy, did all the paperwork, had their interviews, and are back at their homes, waiting until their names work their way up to the top of the list for that country. Often the wait is years. They're being penalized for doing exactly what we asked them to do. They're being penalized for complying with our laws. To allow illegal aliens to remain in the U.S. is hardly fair to them. We're penalizing them because they complied with our laws, and rewarding others for ignoring our laws and entering illegally. Is that the message that we want to send to prospective new residents and eventually citizens? That you get ahead in the U.S. by breaking the law?

Barriers work. We can have a conversation about the most effective type of barrier; but there are people in that business who know much more than I. Bottom line is that they work.

Is it worth shutting the government down in order to get funding for a wall? No. Trump touted himself during the election, and before, as the great negotiator. The Art Of The Deal. What's the problem? If people (Democrats in Congress) won't do what he demands, he just shuts the country down? Is that how he displays his expertise and experience at negotiating? "Do what I want or else?" The very definition of negotiating is give and take, giving something up and getting something in return. Trump's not negotiating, and has shown no ability to do so. He's simply holding the country hostage until he gets his way. That's not negotiating. We need better leadership than that.

You haven't been paying attention.

Trump needs $25 billion. He asked for $5.7 billion. That is an 80% compromise. Pelosi and Schumer offered zero.

Pelosi and Schumer want the government reopened, first. Trump asked if he would receive the wall funding after reopening the government. Pelosi said no.

No one can negotiate with someone who says no. No one can negotiate with someone who doesn't want to negotiate.

You can blame Trump for the shutdown, but facts won't allow you to blame Trump for a failure to negotiate.

But you are always entitled to your opinion.
