Yes Glalt, I made a mistake about the dry sump, the main point I was getting across is the constant maintenance a chainsaw requires to keep them running and cutting and that Thai's arent real good at it, looks like your trying to take this to another level, good luck but why not take up some sort of hobby instead....

So 2 strokes don't have a piston connected to a con rod connected to a crank, reciprocating and rotating in CRANK CASES then?
New one to me...

In fact they call it Wankel, but it is not good for chainsaws.

glalt wrote:You are correct, I have never seen a four stroke chain saw. I did read that Stihl has a sort of hybrid but it is still lubricated with a gasoline oil mix. No crankcase. Chainsaws have no crankcase for a logical reason. They are simply used in many different positions and power versus weight is another important reason.
That should read that most chainsaws are 2 stroke and so have no crankcase. There are some 4 stroke chainsaws where your statements are not accurate.
If you can show me a 4 stroke chainsaw with a crankcase, I'll concede.
Well you did ask

it is a 300 horsepower v8 engine cuts at 200 mph

That example would be difficult to use to cut a tree down. LOL!

At least I don't post erroneous information as you do. Admit it, you're only an expert in your own eyes. There is a lot of good information available and then there are people who think they know everything but actually know nothing.

The original post has me thinking about buying a quality chainsaw, albeit a 36V cordless model. I just want a quiet small machine that can match the same size petrol model.
I contacted the Stihl dealer via email in BKK and his reply was below

Thank you for your interest in stihl
For cordless chainsaw you will need a permit from the Forestry Dept as the guide bar is 12"
Please let me know which other cordless product you are interested in
REGARDS
CHNG

I'll assume that is the official answer via email?
Will investigate the forestry license later. Where ever they are in town.

While in the US over Christmas holidays, we bought our daughter/son-in-law a Ryobi 40v blower/weedwacker/hedgetrimmer set. A single battery plus charger was included. It cost about $360 at Home Depot. At the time, there were no other companies offering 40v systems....most were still 24v. Before we left, I tried out the blower and weedwacker as was impressed with the power. Don't know about lifespan of such a system......but having the power and freedom from wires/gas would be nice to have.

I emailed our son-in-law last night.......he responded.....saying he gets about 20 minutes of good use out of the blower with a freshly charged 40v battery. But then the power drops right off.

The claim is that the 40 volt Greenworks chain saw will cut a cord of firewood before the battery dies. That sounds a little optimistic to me. They also say that it will do 100 cuts but they don't say how big the cuts are. My small wife has her heart set on that saw regardless of how long the battery lasts mainly because she saw a lady in a review using one. The one from AliExpress has a 16 inch bar. I emailed the seller and asked him if I could get one with a 10 inch bar. He is checking and thinks that is possible. The Greenworks 40 volt on Lazada has a 10 inch bar and a note that it is exempt from needing a government permit.

Just a bit of information I read a detailed article about the Stihl saw. Apparently they get past the government regulations by claiming only .8 HP. The writer says the saw has over 2 HP and they get by using a restrictor plate. If you remove the muffler, you can easily remove the restrictor plate, put the muffler back on and the saw will be back to full power.

Has anyone done that?
