Whats the content of the letter from immigration, what do I need to take to them to get the letter? I'm going up there on Friday
K or B,

You should give Mainers post a read (last post of 1st page). I believe it's the most current. According to his experience you don't need photos as they're now issuing the new smart card type license. Also, take note of the procedure for the letter from Imm.

Thanx Papa, The post is a good read and I see the letter from immigration cannot be over 30 days old so it looks like I have plenty of time to work it all out, my renewal isn't until August

It's a standard letter that immigration issues, it's a two day process as I recall, you get a letter from immigration that the landlord has to sign, then the lettre is issued. Pretty easy if the wife is the landlord.

Please remember been three years since I have do this so thing may or may have not changed. I didn't like the idea of driving anymore then I had to on an expired liceense, whcih is why I did it on the day of expiration.

When I did my five year there was no test, just submit the documents and pay the fees.

Hey somebody with more recent experience, now is good time to let everyone know what the situation is now.

I renewed to a 5 year car license in late December and found that Mainer's experience was spot on for me except my landlord co-operated completely in filling out the TM-30 and providing copy of his ID card and housebook so I didn't have to go through the hassles that Mainer did.

[quote="Mainer"]As I noted in my last post on this thread, I promised to tell you of my experiences of renewing my (2) temporary 1-year Thai drivers license to 5-year. Yesterday, I was finally successful in getting my motorcycle and car 5-year driver's licenses. Without a doubt, it was the most frustrating experience of my 3-year stay in Thailand. It far exceeded any ordeal of getting any non-O retirement visa, either the 3 month I got in Laos or 9 month or 1-year extension I got here in Thailand.

It is my intention to tell you of MY experience, although it may not be yours. First, I will try and explain the procedure.

What is needed:

1. FIRST, a letter from the Department of Land and Transport (DTL) requesting a certified letter of address from the Immigration. (The letter from DTL is a must, according to my experience. I tried to sidestep that but it did not work).
2. A temporary 1-yr. Thai driver

I changed from my expired 1 year Thai licence, approx 3 months ago, In Udon and took just my yellow book, photos, and passport.

Took my friend who is a senior teacher at Udon Tech with me in case of translation issues, the girl at the desk spoke good eng No rental agreement, no letter from Immigration, needed,

Only issue , was they cant accept the same picture from ur 1 year licence if u supply that one for the 5 year licence. That took 30 seconds to find 2 new ones.

done and dusted in 30 mins.

Apparently the yellow book may be used in lieu of the Immigration letter, it worked for me as well.

Forget about taking pictures. DLT does it now when they take your money.

The new 5 year driver's license does not have your address on it. It has the driver's license number, issue date, expire date, your name, birth date, and passport number, in both Thai and English. Also where it was issued, in this case, Udon Thani.

I understand should they ever swipe your new card thru a reader, it supplies them with more info.

Also to note, if you have a work permit, you don't need the certificate from immigration.

Re: Renew drivers License AEK Udon

I renewed my 5year driver's license today for another 5 years. It was due to expire on 25 Feb. I got my medical certificate at the Chai-ga-sam Hospital, about 600m up the road from AEK, same side, as you're heading toward Makro. Cost 60 baht.
The AEK office opens at 10. Lady there told me I had to go to Noonsoon because all license renewees now have to watch an hour-long video and the AEK office doesn't provide that service. I gave the folks at Noonsoon a copy of my yellow house paper, a copy of my old license, and a copy of my passport photo page along with a copy of my current visa (they didn't ask for these papers, so don't know if they were all necessary). Sure enough, I had to endure a video, luckily already in progress. As you'd expect, a few tear-jerker stories about driving-gone-bad.....but I was called out after 30 minutes to have my photo taken. No need to bring your own photos any more....they do them on the computer (smart card). I was out in just under an hour.....cost for 5 more years 655 baht (I think the license is 550 baht and the charge for the smart card is 100).
Don't know how long they'll continue to require the video viewing, but since the video is an hour long, you'd best arrive before 11-ish or after 1, as they take an hour long lunch break.
All in all, pretty pain free.

My address is printed on the back of my Smart Card license.

Hi,

Anyone know the procedure when your drivers license has expired by more than 1 month. Was having a look at it last night. Are we supposed to get reminders / bills when expirey is approaching. Have not changed address.

I imagine if a hundred baht note was to get stuck in the paperwork somewhere (accidentely of course) you should have no trouble :D

No renewal is sent to ur address, it is ' Up to You " to renew it, same as the car.

Only things I ever get a renewal notice for are the car insurance with IMG, and my international travel insurance policy from NZI.

Thanks Wazza, if the sticky 100b note does'nt work, I might have to start all over. Not looking forward to that although I do have to pay a visit to immigration in the not to distant future.

My five year drivers license runs out this month, has some one renewed there's, do you still need a Medical Certificate ? photos are done on the computer there now so will not need them.
