Re: Yes it really happened

From Google - The first British telephone directory was published on 15 January 1880 by The Telephone Company. It contained 248 names and addresses of individuals and businesses in London; telephone numbers were not used at the time as subscribers were asked for by name at the exchange.

Re: The all new "Scottish Independence Referendum" thread

There have been thirty years of terrorism and more than three thousand deaths in Northern Ireland on the topic of whether or not to join with the Republic of Ireland. Has the SNP thought that there might be some fanatics in Scotland (and England) who consider a break away from the UK unacceptable? I...

Re: The U.K.'s Christmas Election

I really can't see what all the fuss is about - fake news, gullible voters, newspapers etc.

Be patient for a few more hours and we will all find out how the British electorate has decided to vote.

(Then wait for the losers to tell us why it is all wrong etc etc ad nauseum, ad infinitum.)

Re: Plastic Bags

One of the fastest growing chain of shops in the UK is the fashion chain 'Primark'. Since it's introduction to the UK it has used brown paper bags in various sizes - which I understand are bio-degradable. :D I have no idea about the 'green/eco-friendly' aspects of paper bags: but at least they aren'...

Re: Another UK pension hit.

Very simply put, for anyone resident in UK the first £12,500 of annual income in UK (from any source) is free of tax. After that you are taxed on all UK income. The UK Government pension is well below this level and therefore not taxed at source.

Visa Exemption Extension

I have a friend planning a visit from UK and wishing to stay for about six weeks. If he arrives and gets a 30 day 'Visa Exemption' at Bangkok airport, is it possible to get his stay (ie visa) extended at Udon Immigration? Has anyone actually done this?

Thanks :D

Re: schools obsessed with uniforms

'Uniforms stifle identity, individuality and creativity -- mass producing cookie-cutter dullards who can't think for themselves. Leave the uniforms to bus drivers, policemen, athletic teams and soldiers where they actually serve a purpose. ' So, Giggle, you are saying that bus drivers , policemen, a...

Re: Extension Cords Hard to Find Now

I admit that I know nothing about electrical wiring. However, if you have a three pin plug with a three core wire doesn't the three hole socket in the wall actually have to have a wire leading to earth for the thing to be safe? :? If the main socket isn't correctly earthed then a three wire extensio...

Tamada's quote, " The Brexit vote was always about Leave or Remain and ONLY about that choice. The Tories and the rest of the Remain camp were so cock-sure of a resounding preference for the status quo, they hadn't considered any other result. The fact that they were blindsided by the desires of th...

Re: Brexit domino effect - EU28 Kantar poll

I'm always sceptical about these so called 'polls' as they never specify where/when/how/what population sector/what age group etc were polled. The local newspaper in Nottingham polled every house on one street and got a 96% remain vote. On the same day they polled every house on another street in a ...

Hi Tinpeeba, I find the first of your posters historically confusing with the morphing of the Nazi party into UKIP into Brexiteers. Some mistake here surely? The Nazi party under Hitler wanted a complete European hegemony under German rule, whereas UKIP specifically wanted the opposite with U...

You must understand that this is not immigration, but freedom of movement between all EU countries for work purposes. :D All EU citizens have equal rights to this freedom :D So, the idealogues of greater Europe see it as perfectly fair that 7 British nationals have moved to Rumania and 270,000 Ruman...

In 1940, Britain in the guise of the BEF (British Expeditionary Force) was kicked out of Europe by Nazi Germany and France, led by Petain became an ally of Nazi Germany which went on to conquer the rest of Europe. When Britain was kicked out it had no backup plan!! So now, Germany under Merkel with ...

Re: British PM to face No confidence vote tonight

Unfortunately, over the last thirty years or so, we Brits have allowed ourselves to become dominated by a self appointed politically astute combination of politicians and news media. Their agenda has been that they know best, and we the people of Britain should learn to do as they say, and not as th...

Thanks for your input.
It would seem that I have been lucky over the years, and that Captain Erkchri was correct in his decision. I'll now get my own marriage certificate appropriately validated in case it is needed in future. :D
