Why I have no interest in learning Thai

This has been an interesting discussion. "I don't speak Thai because I've never heard anyone say anything worth responding to" is an unusual reason for not learning a language even though living in the country. Having had discussions with everyone from government ministers to rice farmers, there is ...

Election results??????????????

In Thailand I was always told that the Pak (Party) is not important, it's the Puak (group) that you belong to.

Water pressure

I was taking a shower at the home of a friend in Bangkok, they had an orange 55 gallon trashcan in the shower they used when the water pressure was too low for the shower head to work. They tended to leave the shower head in the tank with the faucet on so that when the pressure returned the tank wou...

A few things I've noticed from watching Thais this week

My brother was a bush pilot in Africa for a while, and one of the things that he noticed about the locals is that they had no problem with his being able to fly a plane, but when he hopped on a bicycle at the airstrip and rode it into town, there was general amazement. When I lived in Kenya, the ide...

Death at Big C Junction

Sorry gentlemen,,,, the statement "Road fatalities per 100,000 inhabitants" is a perfect example of meaningless stats. What difference does it make how many "inhabitants" there are? What is the "road fatalities per 100,000 licensed drivers" ,,,,, that may mean something regarding dangerous driving ...

Ghost Rumors common in Thailand?

Most Thais have a ghost story or two. It's all a part of being a much more 'spritual' people that the usual 'scientific' westerner. Most Farangs will scoff at ghosts, because we've been inculcated since birth in western logic, which doubts the unseen and requires 'provability'. But even in the west ...

Village education

Having worked with village schools for 5 years back in the 90's, results are mixed, but are highly dependant upon the participation of the parents, the desire of the teachers, and the quality of the head teacher. If the parents don't care, neither to the students, and no level of ability on the part...

Thinking of buying a new car? Read this.

Yeah, in Thailand one is not exactly protected by layers of laws regarding fraud. In fact, judging from the remarks of the dealer, he probably doesn't regard selling a flood damaged vehicle as fraud. Talk about cultural difference!

A Question for Americans regarding hospital treatment

Sounds about right. For an X-ray I had recently the insurance adjusted the price down about 80% from what the hospital charged, I paid $25. For a CT scan I had some time ago, the hospital charged $3600, insurance negotiated price was $1800, I paid $250. An emergency room visit would normally cost up...

puzzling question

Often the children of American soldiers were called Amerasians. So I suppose the same could be said of Thai-American parents.

vote buying

When my sister-in-law was running in a local election in Chiang Rai, she'd go through the markets handing out her flyers, and the thing she heard most often was "where's my money?" In an odd twist on the "you get what you pay for" mantra, Thai's are getting exactly what they are getting paid for. Be...

Best/Worst International route to BKK

So far I've flown from the US to LOS 6 times, Thai, Singapore, Eva, Asiana, Korean, and most recenty, Cathay Pacific. Flown through Taiwan, Inchon, Tokyo, Singapore and Hong Kong. The best airports are Inchon and Hong Kong, though Singapore is good, too. They all make BKK look like a bad knockoff. A...

Re: Where can I buy bran in Udon?

Forgot to mention, rice bran (like any other unprocessed bran) has oil in it, so once you've roasted it, store it in a jar in the fridge, where it should keep for a month or so.

Re: Where can I buy bran in Udon?

"Gap" is rice husks...serious roughage...NOT recommended for consumption. But the look on the millers face when you told him you wanted fiber in your diet would be priceless...:) Spread some rice bran on a cookie sheet and roast it for 15 minute in an oven at 375, or roast it in a wok until it begin...

dbriggins: several Thais have just told me 'ram' is pig and fish food!!!!! Are you sure it's safe for human consumption? I just want to add a bit of roughage to my morning bowl of Isaan rice porridge! Yep, that's the stuff...Whether it's safe or not depends on the mill, but you'd probably want to c...

Re: US Expats: You're in Obama's gun sights

The U.S. government – under a new law incorporated in the Hiring Incentives to Restore Employment Act signed by President Barack Obama on 18 March 2010 – is demanding that international financial institutions reveal which of their clients are U.S. citizens with accounts of more than $50,000. Foreig...
