Re: learning the thai language

I've been searching for the elusive reason #6000 for learning the Thai language. I think I found it. Today Udon's VFW Post delivered a few hundred dollars worth of electrical supplies to a school out in the boonies. I had the name of the school in Thai script, but when I searched the internet for th...

Re: Thai economy

If you've done any traveling around various provinces, not just Isaan, you'll see boatloads of new roads, highways, and new buildings everywhere. When we first moved to Thailand, I hesitated to say there was much of a middle class. Today, there's definitely a middle class.......sure there are plenty...

Re: Overpass/tunnel Udon Ringroad Nongkai Hwy

The opportunity to walk/run the 2km stretch of new road is set for 7am on 23 Nov. I consulted my crystal ball and it said there'll probably be some fur balls in traffic around that time. The road is set to open on the 24th. I know you're into translating things, Parrot. An early start, but a closin...

May as well resurrect an ancient thread. The chart shows per capita growth for the past 22 years (2538-2560). Northeast corridor in red, Udon in ?green?. Korat in pink and Khonkaen in yellow.

Re: Overpass/tunnel Udon Ringroad Nongkai Hwy

I can't say if the tunnel/overpass is good or bad for traffic patterns......what I do know is that there were a few years of public discussions in Udon about ideas to alleviate traffic problems. The project completion is right on schedule......I find it amazing when just 14 or so months ago the plac...

The bridge/tunnel is scheduled to open on 24 Nov. Those who are instagram-conscious can walk through the tunnel on 23 Nov.

Yesterday I posted about a promotional item at Ngeesoon on Tipco juice (http://www.udonmap.com/udonthaniforum/viewtopic.php?f=5&t=50171&start=20). This is the sign that was posted: If I'm reading everything except the bottom line, the promotion is on the one liter box of juice. But the bottom line o...

Some Like It Hot

My favorite soup slup shop was closed today so I stopped at a nearby restaurant, immediately next to the mosque on SriChomCheun Rd. If your sinuses need cleaning, it's a good place for a plate of basil beef over rice. Your nose will start to clear while the ladies are cooking the food. It's a light ...

Re: Shopping Today

I've been shopping at Ngeesoon for as long as I've been here. I knew the owners before they died....and back years ago, there was no Tesco, so shopping choices were more limited. I know what products they carry and it's pretty easy to go in and get what I need.....no crowds or long lines. And their ...

Back only 23 or so years ago, it was common to go into the Bangkok Bank, no queue machine thus it was aholes and elbows to obtain service. As it was in the earliest days of ATMs, the village elders would cart a younger member of the family to withdraw a few hundred baht from Yai's account, while Yai...

Re: Quintessentially Isaan (Photos)

There are things you can do in Thailand.....certainly in Isaan, that you can't do in our home country. I more or less followed this guy from about 10km outside of the city to the area near the airport. Ingenuity gives the guy a means to get out and not be housebound. He even has a ramp on the back.

The Crown

I'm a fan of Netflix series, The Crown........teaching me a bit about the monarchy along with excellent actors and story lines. No shoot-em-up-nuke-em drama, but more of fictional documentary based on real history. Season three just streamed this weekend. I was wondering if they'll make a season 4. ...

Re: Udon Nursing Homes

Thanks, Mak. There's a large nursing home 17km from Udon on the Udon-Loei hwy.......Orchid Long Stay Nursing Home. It's relatively new and probably more expensive than other places but has lots of private rooms for those willing to pay more. https://www.facebook.com/OrchidNursingHome/ I went to the ...

Re: Jobs for young Thai people

I think 6 day a week work here, 10-12 hour per day, is more the norm than exception. That seems to be the standard (not ours.....theirs). So, my wife and I were yakking over our morning cuppa (macchiato now more than cappuccino). We know 3 people who work with the US embassy or through the embassy. ...

Re: How Much (Current Funds) Needed For The Long Term?

A million dollars at 2% gets you $20,000. With no other income, you don't have enough. Housing, school, medical, transportation, insurance/medical, US taxes, food, immigration, along with a ?worst? case scenario of 25 Baht to the dollar ......You could do it as a backpacker without a family, but wit...

Re: learning the thai language

It's been a while since I've added to my list of reasons to learn the language......but today, I realized that I'd not be able to call and report a hit and run properly if I couldn't read the language. Say, for example, the truck ahead of me in the photo tags a pedestrian and makes a run for it. Wil...

Glad that worked out for you, maaka. The shop used to carry a good line of o-rings as well, but last time I was there the owner said he didn't carry them anymore. Have no fear: O-rings, across the street from the front of the jail house, there's a motorcycle parts store. They carry a good selection ...

Re: C clips where art thou

No offence intended Saint but I might know Parrots shop location better than Big C..I know Big C if coming from Centara, but if one isnt ready I always end up on some big highway, and miss things. Parrot is that shop in your other post, toward the new fly over bridge thing before Nongkhai highway? ...
