Grits are easy to cook. At home I use "quick" grits which take five minutes to cook after adding to boiling water along with some salt. When in Thailand my choice of breakfast is the Asian breakfast, a bowl of rice soup with chicken, shrimp or pork. Don't care for the heavy English breakfasts. Usual...

When I was in Udon Thani during July I missed American food. The closest was a ham and cheese sandwich at Nobi's.

Perhaps that cheese sandwich can be ordered "toasted." If it's an American menu, they should include apple pie, the favorite American dessert.

Looking for Udon Thani Oil Painting Shop

Can anyone advise me of the location of an oil painting shop in Udon Thani? I'd like to purchase one or two cheap oil paintings while I am in Udon Thani. However, no one I've asked is aware of the existance of such a shop. Those who have been to Pattaya are likely to be familiar with the many open-a...

I'll add my recommendation for selecting Jan Condotel. I've been staying there the last two weeks. Built about three years ago, it has 34 standard rooms and two suites. Standard rooms are good size and have a comfortable large bed. There is plenty of wardrobe space, a desk for using your lap top, TV...

If it is fungal and is long-standing, it may require an anti-fungal medication taken orally in addition to the topical. I've had athlete's foot since my college days. Every now and then I'd buy some spray or powder and attack it without much success. Had a problem of an itching fungus on my back an...

In the US the shank is a "ham." The grocery store I frequent usually call it a "picnic." Ham steak slices are commonly available in shrink wrap.

So "Gammon" refers to any slice from the hind joint? No special treatment other than it is likely sold as cooked?

I've eaten gammon steak, but don't know exactly what it is. I think it's a slice from the pig's shank and is pan fried. Can anyone clarify this?

FYI - There are at least two German restaurants, Kate Raunch and Nobbi's, among the Udonmap sponsers.

A Thai friend advised me that Thais do not like cinnamon because it is commonly used to give medicine a "good" taste. They avoid it as they associate cinnamon with medicine, not food.

You can buy a small transformer at Thai electronic shops that reduce the 220v to 110v for around 500TB. It's about the size of a soda can. Some of the little stands that sell a variety of cheap goods to the tourist sell adapters (50TB?) that will have a female socket for western electronic's prongs ...

Won't be in Udon Thani until middle May but am looking forward to acquiring my copy of the guide. If the small map is a problem, I was curious why they did not just insert the folded map into the guide. But the above post indicates that the guide's producers do not have the rights to the map. Though...

Economic Studies

Although we are certainly interested in knowing where the economy is going and why it does what it does, we are ignorant. Economic history and clever economists gives us a clue. Economists that have the capability and skill to properly evaluate and clearly describe these events should be our guide. ...

Long ago I came to the conclusion that the "girl next door" would likely be the most compatable spouse or best choice for most men. Well, that's not going to happen for me in Thailand. As Ricohoc just advised, you can not change people's disposition or mindset. They can change (a little bit) if they...

Western standards is one way of referring to big government's inept attempts to control society. We know from great experience that State control doesn't remedy society's abuse of alcohol or drugs or sex. There may some means of mitigating the problem of young people drinking. Perhaps a low-alcohol ...
