Banpaeng, This interests me also. Could you expand on directions when in Khon Kean. The issuing agent is a Vietnam embassy I suppose. What instructions would I provide the taxi? Is it near some major hotel or shopping complex nearby. Do you remember the name of the street where the office is located...

Yes. Ruy Suk Mansion really does appear to be another Top Mansion, however with soft beds at a lower rate. Their web site states that "We provide car services for pick up and drop off at any place you wish." I would hope that means they have a hotel minibus that will take guests anywhere within Ring...

Even if sales are suppressed, high-pressure water guns purchased for previous Songkran festivities are likely still around. Don't expect any change in water guns or their use

The State (government and government-connected special interest groups) is always corrupt. You can only reduce its corrupt practices by reducing its power and control. The best way of doing this is to reduce its access to money and to minimize regulating laws. Cut taxes.

In the US I purchased a rhubarb root instead of seeds. By accident my compost pile was adjacent to the rhubarb plant. It was a very healthy and productive plant. I needed the rhubarb for my rhubarb-strawberry pies.

Anyone hear of olive trees growing in Thailand?

The "bad press in foreign media" would include reports of the military coup and the numerous murders and bombings by southern Muslims. News of death and destruction in Thailand can be expected to have a chilling effect on tourist promotion.

When pricing used golf clubs in Udon Thani, I did not find them cheap. It may be worth the trouble of buying a used set at home and packing it with you to Thailand. Maybe I didn't look hard enough. And plain used sets are cheap ($100US) around my US home.

When I was staying at City Lodge I met a few of the locals who played the Udon Thani courses. They invited me to play and had no problem when I advised that I hadn't hit a golf ball in 20 years. Believe the desire to put together a group overrides any irritation about bad play. I haven't golfed yet,...

You might make a copy of your passport and laminate it. Many tourists prefer to carry the copy and leave their passport in a safe. Some also make a copy of their ticket. Don't know if this is effective if your ticket is lost or stolen. I'd recommend you set up a Yahoo or hotmail address and leave it...

Two weeks ago I had a good meal at the night market Picolo Roma. Ambiance and food were good, portions were substantial.

I'll return.

BTW I stayed a month at the (very comfortable) Jan Condotel one block from their old location. I can see why they moved - to far away from falang traffic.

I've been curious as to the total population of Thais and foreigners in Udon Thani City. This would be everyone within the ring road and perhaps those within 5 kilometers outside of ring road. My guess is 200,000.

Anyone know?

It's too bad they didn't use this occasion for a massive issue of thai gold coins as an initial step to place Thailand onto a gold standard. The gold standard (specie) is the only sound money system. However, no government has been able to withstand the temptation of printing free paper money so spe...
