Re: 5 Year Renewal of Driver's License

and if you forget to renew and are stopped by the Police what's the fine? I'm sure you'd be fined for an expired license. I don't think the 1 year grace period allows driving..... probably more designed for some who might be working overseas and 8s unable to renew it on time. I'm guessing, of course

Re: 5 Year Renewal of Driver's License

"if you let the license expire you have to go through the entire procedure again." Several Thai websites that discuss renewal experiences, as recently as 6 months ago, say you can go up to 1 year after expiration without jumping through hoops to get a new one. 3months prior, up to 1 year after. If I...

Knives/Scissors Sharpened

We've been sharpening our kitchen knives in a small shop directly behind the jail......across the street. We met the owner and his wife 23 years ago and they continue to do a good business. Although most of their business are high end hair cutting equipment (electric and hand scissors), they also do...

Re: Is it safe to breathe?

I looked at that website, but the monitors were in Khonkaen, Korat, and Loei. I asked a Chamber of Commerce friend if Udon had its own monitor. He said, not yet.

Re: Late Deposits To Bangkok Acount from overseas

I started my retirement pay from DFAS going direct to SCB back in May and haven't had any problems. They use OF 1199-i and it took 2 months to make the change. They emailed me the form, I had the bank sign it then faxed it back to them. Thanks so much for posting this info. DFAS has yet to update t...

Re: Quintessentially Isaan (Photos)

I spotted these 4 sardines as I was on my way to my lunch noodle slurp. They made it about 1/3 the way into the intersection as the light was turning. The driver apparently thought better of running the light and was back pedaling her way behind the white line....apparently to avoid 'violating the l...

Re: Wattananuwong Improvements

Just a heads up for anyone traveling the back way into Central. This morning, Wattananuwong Rd was closed at the 3 way intersection just past the Karin Hotel. All traffic heading toward central turned right at the 3 way. People in the know (about the construction) avoided Wattananuwong and headed to...

Re: Late Deposits To Bangkok Acount from overseas

Question: Can DFAS MyPay do direct deposits to a Thai Bank (shown as a overseas transfer)? Started doing wire transfers earlier this year, but it normally takes a 20 minute phone call and 25.00 transfer fee. The VFW service officer who is familiar with pay issues says you can do VA and SSA deposits...

hahahaha!! that's hilarious!!! The duck noodle salesman pulled the spark plug cable off!!!! bwahahaha!!! Good for him!!! Hope the Gold shop owner gave him a little gift! Yeah, that's what caught my attention. That restaurant has been there since the caveman days......but still as good as it was 23 ...

Here's a phone number and name of one of the soccer field owners. Perhaps you can have your partner give them a call.

Re: Gold Shop Thief Thwarted

don't see a huge "difficult" economic situation yet.. As far as I can tell down at the village level those that want to work can find it... No shortage of red license plates all varieties of vehicles. No shortage of help wanted signs in the local webpages. Although there was an unusual robbery/kill...

High Altitude Travels in Udon

Udon is about 560' above sea level. If you want your family to enjoy the sensation of ears popping, there's a place 1750' above sea level and a mere 50 or so km from the center of Udon where you can get some nice views.....no doubt would be very nice for a sunrise in a cool foggy morning or a sunset...

Gold Shop Thief Thwarted

A thief robbed a gold store on Phosri Rd today and made off with a single chain. His escape was thwarted by an observant person at the Chinese restaurant directly across from the Bangkok Bank/Kasikorn Banks. You can dump the article into google translate for a pretty good idea of how things turned o...

Re: Artificial Lawns

Two ideas: There are now several professionally installed artificial turf soccer fields in Udon proper. One is near the airport (the shortcut way). You could stop by and inquire. I've also asked a friend involved with the Chamber of Commerce. He's checking. I checked Udon websites in Thai but couldn...

Re: Cost of Medical Care - Clinics vs. Private Hospital

It's worth mentioning that all of the street clinics that I've used over the years do not employ pharmacists. Instead, either the doctor himself prepares the meds for the patient, or more likely, the receptionist prepares the package of meds and maybe gives them to the doctor to double check before ...

Re: Late Deposits To Bangkok Acount from overseas

A friend has been getting his SSA deposits directly into his Kasikorn account since the beginning of August.
SSA - yes. VA - yes. Military retirement pensions - not yet.

Cost of Medical Care - Clinics vs. Private Hospital

Over many years, I've been to a variety of street side clinics.....ENT, dermitology, eyes. Several years ago, I had a full up physical at Bangkok Hospital including a thorough exam by the ENT doctor and eye doctor. I realized there's street food and there's restaurant food when it comes to medical c...

Re: Late Deposits To Bangkok Acount from overseas

Folks in the local VFW say that the rules were changed recently that allow SSA and VA deposits to be made directly into your Thai bank account......Bangkok Bank, Kasikorn, SCB. No further need to go through the Bangkok Bank of NY.

You'll see this sign in a variety of places.....on the back of large transport trucks, TOT/AIS/True/3BB vehicles, and today, at the PTT station where I regularly fill up. Many many years ago, before PTT cleaned up its act (including its bathrooms), I had an encounter with an attendant who insisted o...

Re: Landscaping.

Late Oct-early March is a good time for things like lettuce, tomatoes, parsley, dill, mint. Past that time the hot weather is pretty brutal on those veggies. You can grow Thai style eggplant pretty much all year. Likewise with chili peppers. Pretty easy to grow lynchee, mango, papaya, lime, coconut,...
