Second Ring Road Plans

Post by fdimike » May 6, 2013, 8:59 pm

This second ring road makes no more sense than many other hairbrained ideas coming out of the Thai government. Maybe someone should think about completing the first ring road first. I put this idea right up there with the overpass by Big C which took many years to complete and adds practically nothing to improving traffic flow. I would assume someone made a pocketfull of change over that fat project.

Since arriving to live in Udon the Big C overpass has bemused me ,,, i stayed the first few weeks in a friends gaff in Suka Sem on the Sakorn Nakorn rd ,,, using this road daily ,,, i just coundnt see the point of wasting all the time effort and cash on the elevated over pass ,,, a total no brainer if it was down to safety issues then again it simply aint worked ...

i may be wrong.

The problem with trickle down economics here in LOS is that the trickle down is more like a waterfall into someone's pocket. Latest from the BP indicates corruption is now at 30-50% of the project cost. I suspect Thailand will move on down the ladder in the next corruption perception index. Right now LOS is sitting at 88 amid all world countries along with the likes of a number of other wonders such as China, India & Saudia Arabia. It's so nice to know that our hard earned tax dollars that the US military is spending in SA is going into some fat cat's pocket.

It would work if people used the overpass instead of the road below. I see lots of cars just following the road without turning left before the overpass ends.

So true. I used to live on the other side of the overpass, and it was a welcomed addition. The intersection below is one of the deadliest in Udon, and the overpass a nice stress and time saver. It is used quite heavily during rush hour, and the congestion below would be 10 times if the overpass wasn't available.

Nong Khai rd next, and it will probably be the same corruption ridden, delayed project. But very welcomed when completed.

2nd ring rd is an excellent idea, and will actually function as a by-pass, if not obsolete by the time it's done. The ever expanding city is amazing.

On the 'how close to Phen' question, the 'proposed' 2nd ring rd will be above the lakes, but just below the 2021 / Nk rd intersection. Less than 10 kms off the present ring rd. Hope that helps

Second ring road would neither hinder nor help me. Could really care less how they waste their money. Seems to be more money being spent by the Gov't in Issan then any where else in the country.

The link at https://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid ... =1&theater
shows the latest presentation at a city planning meeting........proposed second ring road along with the high speed rail link.

I can't make out all the text on the map, but the upper left center blue circle says:
Udon University

The two lines pointing toward the green circle (inside the existing ring road) say:
Project to improve tungsrimeuang
Central city planning

The purple box on the south side says:
Industrial development area

The red box just above the Industrial development area says:
center point ring road 7 (???)

I can't make out all of the green dot just north of the existing ring road (Nongkai Hwy), but it's probably associated with the Agricultural School (พัฒนา)

It's odd they run surveys and Thai's say corruption is OK. Their Country guess they can do it their way. So I suppose if it's not a problem to them then it shouldn't be to us.

So there must be enough money being spread around :-$

I just hope there are lots of transport cafes/greasy spoons, dotted around the second ring road serving decent egg and chips, and tea like Mother makes.

For anyone interested in planning for the second ring road....city planners continue to tweak the exact location.....the map below is as detailed as any I've seen.

Also discussed were plans to move the city prison to a location behind the Agricultural College....160 rai plot. What to do with the existing location? Possibly a city park or room for the Provincial Courthouse to spread out.

What are those areas outlined in orange?

The East side one says "Rahjapat" (University). The upper left one says "Udon City". As best I can tell, the lower one is something to do with the military (ทหาร)....but can't read it clearly.

...or possibly Udon's first skyscraper!!! [-o< \:D/

Parks and courthouses don't generate the revenue a skyscraper would. Udon needs one to truly graduate from a city to a modern metropolitan area.

Makes me giddy to hear a confirmation they are moving the prison!

the outlined area to the south of Udon is the old Ramasun Thai military base and the Thai artillery unit and road construction unit which is on the east side of Rte 2 across from the Udon Regional Cancer institute and the Nursing School.

I would have thought if one was going to move the prison, also move the criminal courthouse, any moves to end the debacle along that road would be a bonus, what with the schools etc, it is possibly one of the most crowded roads in the morning and afternoon in Udon, nowhere to park, when I had to visit the court in assistance to a friend I had to park some 5 blocks away and walk and that was at 11am in the morning.
