Ashamed to be English since 23rd June 2016 when England voted for racism & economic suicide.
Disgusted that the UK is “governed” by a squalid bunch of economically illiterate, self-serving, sleazy and corrupt neo-fascists.

Re: SIN TAX INCREASE
Go back and ask any mom (or pop) shop charging more to show you the official, government tax increase notification. Or did they get an email or maybe a LINE message from the excise chief himself? Or did they, like many others, pull an arbitrary couple or three baht out of their collectives asses?tutone wrote: ↑September 27, 2017, 11:26 amI do not know if this is true, but a vendor at UD town told me that the maker or distributor (lost in translation) of L&M cigarettes is absorbing the tax increase so that the price will remain the same. Only with Thai cigarettes is the tax increase being passed to consumers. The local mom and pop store also told me only Thai cigarettes have a tax increase but she didn't know why. Don't know if this applies to other non Thai brands.
Based on the ORIGINAL schedule of tax increases being published in the Royal Gazette on a Friday and enforced the following day, I expected the mom & pop stores to make a few baht and paid no mind to it. But the governments cack-handed way of announcing and publishing it BEFORE even meeting with brewers, importers and the like to discuss implementation, then admitting to having got it all wrong in the first place and then unable to decide or announce anything means that the mom & pop stores have a license to print money... until they run out of beer and ciggies. Meanwhile, talking heads in the government still say they are doing spot checks to catch and punish price gougers but looking in all the wrong places while collectively several million baht in potential submarine payments are getting shop owners new tires on the pickup truck so they have a smoother drive back from makro where they are still paying the old prices for beer.

Err, no it’s not, it’s called business. Let me guess, when you’re in the Uk & the Chancellor announces fuel will go up at midnight in a certain day, you’re the one arguing with the cashier the next day because their underground tanks must have been filled before the price rise, right?
Ooh, ooh, I’ve got another, when the exchange rate drops a couple of satang, you’re the one making a scene in the bank because all their cash in the till must have been topped up at a higher exchange than the one they’re giving you at the time
No wonder lots of Farang business disappear after a short length of time, probably don’t have enough money to restock
May the bridges I burn light the path in front of me

I don't know why so many are talking about spending 1-4 bt more, when, if you had a brain and bought the whole case you could get Heineken at 790x12 =65 baht per bottle. This is why sellers make money off you dumbed down people.

Come on Statts, get a grip, the tax rises were implemented on the 16th September so we're talking AFTER its supposed to have been addedstattointhailand wrote: ↑September 27, 2017, 2:46 pm

The new rates are based on Retail prices not CIF as before. Its just an argument now on the way the announced tax rises have to be inflated again to cover all the associated costs of retail such as storage, handling & distribution which weren't applicable with the previous taxation method.

Re: SIN TAX INCREASE
Maybe a simple way of explaining this is:
No additional taxes have been collected as noting has been released , either local brewers ( beer brewed after 16th hasnt been distributed ) or Customs releasing imported products.

Re: SIN TAX INCREASE
well the tax started when ? I think about the 16th ? so if theres 10,000,000 bottles drink everyday and the tax is say 2b a bottle , the beer industry is racking up an extra 20,000,000b a day tax bill, how do you think there going to get this money back ? also jon from the tap said some prices might come down ? don't see Tesco dropped any prices, does that mean Tesco are stuffing people ? . and even Felix is not worrying about a few baht..a few cents...a couple of pence . I just see this as thai bashing again, there allowed to run a business the way they do. people pulling up in a brand new ford ranger wildcat complaining about a couple of baht. my wife rarely sells beer , maybe 6 a day , if she puts it up 2b because she paid 1b more ,well I don't think she will be retiring soon on the extra 6 baht A DAY she makes if bashing over beer prices just find a farang bar to pick on, any bar. some great examples down soi slum. instead of bashing mom and pop who are some of the best hosts, cant beat stopping at one for a cold one on a hot day, supplied cold with ice for just a couple of baht more than makro sell it for, plus makro don't put it in a freezer for 2 hours before selling it to you.
don't forget it also has a knock on effect, your landlords cost of living goes up, and who will pay , yes the tenant, and how can the tenant pay for this...buy raising the price to cover extra cost.

Err, read my previous post. retailers have to sell at an inflated price now to compensate for the inflated price they are going to have to pay when they restock. Simples.stattointhailand wrote: ↑September 27, 2017, 3:15 pm

Or do you think mom & pop should just pay the extra next time out of their own pockets so they've effectively been trading for nothing. Little shops are always first to rise prices anywhere in the world because they can't afford to absorb increases, that's not profiteering, its called making a living.
Really Isn't that cutting off your nose to spite your face? How long to drive to Makro? Couple of hours of your freetime maybe? Cost of having a vehicle in the first place? Cost of insurance on said vehicle? Fuel? & you might save a couple of Baht on a bottle. WoopeeDESERVE to lose custom and go out of business

Re: SIN TAX INCREASE
When this tax hike was announced, the likelihood of mom & pop stores instantly adding a few baht on the small stock they had in stock was considered inevitable and acceptable as they are salt-of-the-earth mom & pop stores after all.papafarang wrote: ↑September 27, 2017, 3:26 pmwell the tax started when ? However, the government's total fustercluck of delaying the official agreement and publication of precise tax increases to the brewers and importers had meant that mom & pop shops will still be buying their cases at makro or the wholesaler or Big C at the pre-tax increase prices but still charging their artificially higher prices for longer.
The bars that I drink in (you know who you are!) haven't instantly hiked prices because they aren't paying any more for their beer right now and yes, they aren't charging over the top for chilling it, sticking it in a condom and walking it to the table.
For now, my local mom & pop shop is getting shunned by more than just the token farang in the moobahn.
As my dad used to say, "Fun is fun but to hell with p!ssing in the blind man's tin."
Re: SIN TAX INCREASE
Shopped at Big C today Archa cans still at the old price shelf was chock a block sign in Thai states limit per person in my case three slabs (24 cans per slab) not hard to use two trolleys and two different check outs on the way home stopped at 7/11 at the bottom end of of Soi Sampan for a traeller 31 baht so they have increased their price per 1 B per can.
I am like every one else when the the correct prices are announced I will pay the increase without a whinge and shut up as to my comment yesterday about Ma & Pa 5 B was a price gouge at this point of time if that is the official increase when some one finds out I will pay but not from his shop.
If you are an Aussie like me you know about price increases in Aus. every year in August on Booze,Fuel and ciggies there is a price rise every one has a whinge for a while then pays up and shuts up for eleven and a half months

Re: SIN TAX INCREASE
You're right Macca. In Oz, I used to pay and shut up after a day or two of complaining. Fuel, booze & ciggies go up by the CPI in February as well as August. As we all know, everything is transported, therefore if fuel goes up, it's more to transport the booze & ciggies, so they go up by more than the CPI. Pay more GST/VAT, too. It's a con, but it's better than tambourine playing.

Re: SIN TAX INCREASE
As of today the situation remains the same ... and perfectly put by Wazz ... except it is actually the importers not requesting the release of products from customs bond NOT customs holding products. Will be interesting if this goes on any length of time how much stock do the supermarkets distribution centers hold ?? also ..another thing ..
The customs salaries are paid from the duty tax that is collected so i have no doubt there is money in the kitty to pay all the civil servants within this sector ..BUT ... with no back door under the table payments coming their way how will they make the finance payments on the houses , cars n motorcycles they have bought on the drip .

Re: SIN TAX INCREASE
Latest from Bkk ... customs have sent out a new tax tariff calculus regarding alcoholic beverages to importers and Thai beverage brewers ...and it aint looking very positive .. scrap what was previously "outed" via various media sources. It appears they are sticking to the first idea or a tax calculated on the retail price rather than the first point of sale with in the kingdom which was usually importer to distributor ie wholesale ...
As said before wait n see but the fact at least one importer has rerouted his German beverage container back to Singapore to sell in another destination as the new calculations simply meant it wasnt good business sense to release it into the market here .... all this doesnt offer a great deal of optimism... as of now still nothing being taken out of customs bond or the Thai breweries .
I purposely have not quoted the numbers im hearing as nothing is cast in stone YET .

Maybe mom & pop with little working capital & poor cashflow in their store adding just B5 in readiness for when they have to restock was a little bit conservative then

Indeed the MnP shops and any other locations that have already increased prices when they should not have done so thinking they were being clever may have jumped the gun and will need to increase again when the real calculations are done and in action .. and its looking like it will be more than 5 bt on a small bottle of local beer if the calculus system issued is correct .
Time will tell ??? alas looks like Niggly come the end of the season may be celebrating the Might Whites promotion with home brew or orange squash

Re: SIN TAX INCREASE
What a shambles. The leaders stated that they would hold back the announcement on the increases to prevent hoarding and here we are more than 2 weeks later still waiting on the Sword of Damocles to fall and actually tell us how much we have to pay in additional taxes. How much hoarding has occurred, not so much with the hand to mouth M&P shops but with the big boys who can afford to wait on perhaps a 10% return on their investments. That said, was in Tops, Nong Han today and still plenty of Bells Scotch available at very reasonable prices.
Re: SIN TAX INCREASE
Hehe, I still don't think they were trying to "be clever", just trying to pre-empt the cost to restock which they probably can't afford to absorb in the short term. Looking at the dust in some of these shops, they've hardly got a large fast turnover.Drunk Monkey wrote: ↑September 29, 2017, 1:28 pmIndeed the MnP shops and any other locations that have already increased prices when they should not have done so thinking they were being clever may have jumped the gun and will need to increase again when the real calculations are done and in action .. and its looking like it will be more than 5 bt on a small bottle of local beer if the calculus system issued is correct .
