"phpBB : Critical Error" while trying to access fo

Post by dxc_chappie » September 13, 2005, 9:13 pm

Over the last few weeks I seem to be getting more and more errors while trying to read forum posts. The error is:

phpBB : Critical Error
Could not connect to the database

Also, it seems to be far slower than the old forum.

Is there a website hosting problem?

Regards

I reported it to Admin earlier today when it happened to me and now all seem to be working fine. Same as you Dakoda I could access the old forum, but not the new...

OOps!

Something tells me that the 'in-box' at admin HQ is gonna be rather full today. I sent her a message about this too :)

It has been happening quite often recently, although todays blackout was the longest yet. Somethings not right somewhere.

It's just a mysql database error, a lot of forums suffer the same problems, the probable cause is the company hosting the site.

The old 'cutecast' forum should continue to work without any problems, until a problem does occur and there will be very little support to get it sorted, and it .does have it's problems, like disappearing users etc etc, as Paul will confirm

Thanks for all the emails and Pm's. When this happens we have to send an email to the web hosting company and they sort it out within minutes. The trouble is that I can't monitor this site 24/7 so I can only find the problem when I log on.

We have no problem with cutecast forum because it uses cgi and not mysql tables, however cutecast is technically unreliable.

As BB quite rightly says it is a problem with the host and not the forum.

Anyway thanks to everyone for their patience.

I wonder if there is more reliable web hosting company out there?

I unfortunately have cleaned up my book marks, so I only have the below one, which is being used by a CMUG (Mac User Group) in SC. I use to recommend a company on the west coast of Canada, but don't have link or remember name. The below company use dependable Mac servers!

Do web hosting rates vary much?I would have thought all the competition would keep all rates low.

Prices vary a great deal, and the most expensive is rarely the best! I would think it would be much cheaper to use an Asian/Indian hoster, because of labor prices, but never looked into it. 8)

If you are dealing with a host in a distant time zone then any requests or questions you might have would be answered by the guy on the night shift. When i worked in banking the computer guys on the night shift were not exactly keen to do much problem solving.

Probably best to go with the same host that some popular thai companies use, like thaiepay or thaicd, these guys rely solely on having 100% uptime, so service levels with their hosts should be very good.

http://porar.com looks pretty good, but I would'nt like to advise purely because all hosting companies have bad days

Are there any problems with censorship or possible legal problems on hosting in Thailand?

Shin Corp filed a defamation lawsuit against Ms Supinya and Thai Post, demanding 400 million baht in damages for comments made by Ms Supinya in an article run by the newspaper in July 2003.

Not sure Admin has 400 million baht to spare in the unlikely event that one of us was to make an inappropriate remark (not that any of us ever would).

A very good point there jimbo, another one of the reasons I would'nt like to advise.

I guess the only way to stop something like that happening as the forum grows, would be to appoint a moderator or 2 to keep check with things and edit where necessary. Would have to be a local though imho.

Maybe it would be best to keep our website hosted in America so we can avoid anything like that happening to us.

We will in time look for moderators if the forum grows so big that we are unable to scan every message. But like it is a the moment it is pretty easy to keep track of all the messages. Until now we haven't had to delete anything because you guys and girls are a very polite bunch :)
