The forest was shrinking daily but the trees kept voting for the axe as its handle was made of wood and they thought it was one of them.
Re: Happy St George's Day
Thank you Vince, have a good day and be prepared to flay any dragons that may raise it's head to tell us we shouldn't celebrate our own national day .
Its also the birthday of possibly the most famous Englishman William Shakespeare.1564-1616.Ageing is a privilige denied to many .

Re: Happy St George's Day
Pertinent after your last comment TruBrit -
Thou careless, awake!
Thou peacemaker, fight!
Stand, England, for honour,
And God guard the Right!
Thy mirth lay aside,
They cavil and play:
The foe is upon thee,
And grave is the day.
The monarch Ambition
Hath harnessed his slaves;
But the folk of the Ocean
Are free as the waves.
For Peace thou art armed
Thy Freedom to hold:
Thy Courage as iron,
The Good-faith as gold.
Through Fire, Air, and Water
Thy trial must be:
But they that love life best
Die gladly for thee.
The Love of their mothers
Is strong to command;
The fame of their fathers
Is might to their hand.
Much suffering shall cleanse thee;
But thou through the flood
Shalt win to Salvation,
To Beauty through blood.
Up, careless, awake!
Ye peacemakers, fight!
ENGLAND STANDS FOR HONOUR.
GOD DEFEND THE RIGHT!
Thou careless, awake!
Thou peacemaker, fight!
Stand, England, for honour,
And God guard the Right!
Thy mirth lay aside,
They cavil and play:

Sir Winston Churchill? That's an interesting thought though, who is the most famous Englishman?trubrit wrote:Its also the birthday of possibly the most famous Englishman William Shakespeare.1564-1616.

Re: Happy St George's Day
ah yes, whilst Sir Winnie will always be the greatest Englishman in my book, after all he epitomised the true British spirit in times of adversity , and even today a tingle still goes up my spine when I hear his speeches, I must concede his fame is not so universal as the works of William S.vincemunday wrote:Sir Winston Churchill? Happy St George's Day to you too.
St George epitomises the multicultural world we enjoy in the UK, and in much of the world.
Born in Cappadocia, part of modern day Turkey, to a Greek father and Jewish mother, he fought in the Roman army and came to be venerated by Jews, Christians and Muslims. He is Patron Saint in Aragon, Catalonia, Georgia, Lithuania, Palestine, Portugal, Germany and Greece; and of Moscow, Istanbul, Genoa and Venice. He is also patron saint of soldiers, archers, cavalry and chivalry, farmers and field workers, riders and saddlers, and he helps those suffering from leprosy, plague and syphilis. In recent years he has been adopted as patron saint of Scouts of all countries.
His shrine in Palestine is revered by Christians, Muslims and Jews. He is also said to help deranged people of all faiths.

Well said 'Tinpeeba'.
It would be very difficult to reach any kind of agreement on either the "Greatest" or the "Most Famous" Englishman, although few would dispute that William Shakespeare was the most influential.
As an Englishman, and a citizen of the world, my greatest pride in the country of my birth is that it has given the world the sweetest-sounding, the most expressive, and the widest spoken and understood language. There are a myriad of factors for this, but William Shakespeare, as the foremost exponent of the art of expression, must be given a lot of credit.
"My love doth so approve him, that even his stubbornness....his cheeks and frown....have grace and favour in them."
