America is the unquestionable leader of the world
America is the unquestionable leader of the world
I’ve been watching the global news surrounding this week’s events – the meetings between the G7, and the NorK/US meeting. A few observations have come to mind.
Britain has entered a period of absolute obscurity. The global influence of the country is nil. Their leaders’ opinions mean nothing, nobody except the Brit media cites them, it has joined the third tier ranks of Greece, Chad, and Mongolia. The last desperate vestiges of being a world player are long gone. I honestly believe the subjects of the nation understand this and this is why they are desperately lashing out at their supposed special friend. I have some advice: Tripping the faster runner doesn’t improve your time; Whining endlessly about another countries’ foreign policy neither erases your deplorable record, nor influences the target of your moaning, especially when that country happens to be the current global hegemon. Lastly, the Brits have taken their eye off the ball. While they’ve been consumed with criticizing the US, they’ve been overrun, steamrolled, and submitted from without.
Why is the Singapore summit only between NorK and US? I’m sure South Korea and Japan are far more invested in regional security. Where are they? Cowering? Have they deferred to the US for all solutions? Where are the oft-cited brilliant negotiators who routinely claim superiority? They’re all silent. One fact is crystal clear. America remains the world leader. Everybody knows it, and it drives a good number of people insane. Oh well, I can only imagine what it might be like to go through life as a helpless follower.

China is a keen observer of the meeting. In fact, it is probably more about the U.S. relationship with China and its direction than anything else. China helped push the North Korean leader to Singapore, and the U.S. will be expected to reciprocate in some way, perhaps in the South China Sea. Countries other than the U.S.A. and China do not count, and have no impact.

Not all Brits are US haters, most of the people I know would rather be the 51st state than a part of the EU, our cultures are very closely tied and we even sort of share a common language. This was always about the US and N Korea, an agreement would have meant nothing if it had been brokered by anyone else, it’s got to smart the Trump haters, he’s doing a great job.

Leftists would rather die in a nuclear war than have to give credit to Trump for helping to stop a nuclear war.vincemunday wrote: ↑June 12, 2018, 2:31 pmNot all Brits are US haters, most of the people I know would rather be the 51st state than a part of the EU, our cultures are very closely tied and we even sort of share a common language. IMO he deserves more than a pat on the back, surely a Nobel peace price?

If you're referring to Trump, he has already waved that off with a comment he made weeks ago -- that "if it happens, the prize will be peace."vincemunday wrote: ↑June 12, 2018, 3:18 pmIMO he deserves more than a pat on the back, surely a Nobel peace price?

Not at all sure about anyone British born and bred wanting to be in some 51st state. I mean Puerto Rico is already bustling along as the US's vasal state already. As the late Bruce Forsythe used to say, "Didn't they do well?"vincemunday wrote: ↑June 12, 2018, 2:31 pmNot all Brits are US haters, most of the people I know would rather be the 51st state than a part of the EU, our cultures are very closely tied and we even sort of share a common language. Similarly not all Americans are mental midgets like the OP.

Re: America is the unquestionable leader of the world
Doesn't particularly matter whether you're sure or not Tamada, what I'm saying is if it were a choice most people I know would rather be a part of the USA as opposed to being a part of the EU, bearing in mind most people I know are massively Brexiteers. Of course they all without exception want independence from any bloc and to take control of our country back, they wouldn't gladly hand it over to anyone whether it be the USA or otherwise.

Glad i'm not "most people you know".vincemunday wrote: ↑June 13, 2018, 11:39 amDoesn't particularly matter whether you're sure or not Tamada, what I'm saying is if it were a choice most people I know would rather be a part of the USA as opposed to being a part of the EU, bearing in mind most people I know are massively Brexiteers. If it were a theoretical choice between being a part of Europe or Amerika , it certainly aint gonna be the good 'ole US of A...
I've met a few good, decent Americans in my lifetime, but generally, give me a German, Danish, Italian, Spaniard, Greek or Portuguese person, their culture, their countryside and food and drink everytime over the alternative from the other side of the Atlantic.

Re: America is the unquestionable leader of the world
Kim Jong-un was the active ingredient in the meeting. Trump called it off and Jong-un knew some flattery would probably get it back. He's playing the US against China. South Korea was also pushing Trump strongly for the summit. There are more than 2 players.
Governments in western foreign countries rarely bash the US in public as that's not usually the best way to deal with the American government. That's changed under Trump. The British headmistress has been forced to respond at times because of internal politics. The OP exaggerates as he likes to do the demise of the UK but he's correct in that the Brexit problem has seen the UK fall down the pecking order.
I see the current era as the rise of Germany and China and the decline of US leadership as it enters a more isolationist phase (e.g. withdrawing from the Paris climate agreement and threatening trade wars). The Chinese economy is fairly soon going to be far larger than the US economy and is more focused on spreading it tentacles abroad.
Western democracies are increasingly looking to Merkel for leadership. That might change but not in the next few years.

So in reality, most people you know DO NOT want to be part of the US.vincemunday wrote: ↑June 13, 2018, 11:39 am... Thanks for the clarification.

Does that make it a case of THEM & US ?
Re: America is the unquestionable leader of the world
There is leadership and there is bullying. Wonder which Trump would count as?
Though the USA (not America, actually 2 continents, not countries) is the most powerful country, leadership is another thing. And i think most of Asia (where most people live) looks more towards China these days, although not always from choice.

Re: America is the unquestionable leader of the world
I don't think Trump wants to lead. He doesn't act like he does.
China is the go to country on trade. It's leading there. On climate change, it now seems to be a joint European / Chinese lead. In the Middle East, it seems the Russians and Iran have gained considerable ground.
Even with North Korea, it seems the US was led to the party by the North Koreans. Hopefully that will be a good thing but I fear Trump is being played.
If was wanting counsel on dealing with the bad boy administration in Washington or international issues, Merkel and Macron seem the go to folks. They seem a cut above May who is more focused on domestic issues.
The US has taken quite a fall but some of that is cyclic. The rise of China isn't. If I was an American taxpayer, I might think some of this was good news.

Re: America is the unquestionable leader of the world
I have to agree with Joudon, Merkel is VERY focused on domestic issues at the moment, Macron's popularity is the lowest it's ever been and Theresa May is a complete moron, personally I'd be inclined to let Nigel Farage, Aaron Banks and Raheem Kassam deal with Donald Trump, they're already great friends but that's another story.
