We were in the immigration office today and the wife was watching the farangs at the 90 day report desk. She said lots of them were handing over a 'tip' to the officer.

I have never been asked to tip for a 90 day report. My last report was five days ago.

Pretty good hourly rate for a few minutes, simple task. 30 baht for stapling, 30 for a stamp and 40 for a few keystrokes?

I would NEVER pay for a 90 day report and I never have, NOR have I ever been asked to.

I did my 90 day report this morning and was asked by the IO for 100 baht. When I asked what the 100 baht was for, all he said was 100 baht. I told him it was a free service and therefore costs 0 baht. Once again, he repeated 100 baht but his assistant had already handed back my passport to me so I politely told the IO that I paid the correct fees when I applied for my marriage extension and therefore had to make no further payments. I then thanked them both and left but the IO seemed to be a bit embarrassed over the issue!!

"Embarrassed" - I hope so and he should also be ashamed. Entirely up to those who wish to voluntarily tip, although I feel to give anything for such a simple, quick task is a bit crazy. But for this officer to actually demand money in his position, knowing it's free, hoping to prey on those unaware or fearing a comeback if they don't pay, stinks. [-X

What a bunch of Cheap Charlies we have on here… People who openly admit to tipping an insignificant bar girl but refuse to give a small token gesture to a person who could very easily cause problems for you if they wish to…

I like to walk down easy street when at all possible… Don’t beat yourselves up it’s not worth the stress, next time you are requested to make a small donation do so with a smile, I guarantee you will feel better knowing that you have made a new friend who will happily help you with any immigration problems that may arise in the future.

Did my Marriage extension this morning. Got in at 9 am, and didn't even have to sit down and wait, called up as i walked through the seats. No problems just the realms of documents for them to check and me to countersign. They did a bit of photocopying so gave them 100 baht to cover it. Only time i tip each year.

One thing, the girl spent some time rather puzzled and then asked me about my brother. I said yes, i have one in the UK. She asked if older or younger, and i said older, which satisfied her. I wondered what was the reason. A bit later they gave me a document to sign that included my parents full names. As i have never provided those, i can only assume that the puzzled look was she searched the British registry of births and deaths and found me and my brother, and was unsure which i was. Or possibly have access to the UK passport database. Yet another check on who we are. Not sure if they can do that for other countries.

Not cheap, just selective.

Doesn't seem very likely to me. Did you get married in Thailand? If I remember correctly I had to fill in a form with questions about my family background when we applied for our marriage certificate.
I hope I die in my sleep like my grand dad did, not screaming like his passengers

Never had to mention my brother, or his age when getting married. So must have come from a UK government database.

"Cheap Charlie" Tips? - as I said, down to the individual. Requested payment to someone thinking it's a fee, or to ensure an easy ride is different.

We had this before demanding monies for services that are by definition on the official web-site are free . Although one can't but help understanding the situation regarding the change ( that is why I always have the correct cash available ) , tips are just that, monies paid for services rendered normally above and beyond the call of the job description. Now for the life of me only on two occasions in the last 15 years ( apart from the holding the passport scam fro visa authentication ) services provided have been above the remit of the officer to clarify a couple of possible problems., done with a smile and I was made to feel at ease the whole time. That was tipped generously.

This is part of a system whereby the public pay extra for minimal services already paid for by the Govt to the officers concerned and it is a corrupt practice which you can complain about to the relevant office, or you can as many do just decline to partake.
Myself I never get asked others I am sure also never get asked, they are selective in their requests, the last 90 day I did was in and out in 3 minutes done with a smile and a Happy New Year, no requests for anything at all .

I will agree they are very selective, and I was always selected. So for the past two years I have not stepped inside Udon immigration.
