EMS mail? Go to NK in person and try? Both?
both, they will either refuse and let you know, if no notice, show up as usual for 90 day at 7 day grace or withing. worst they can do is refuse, but try to get something in writing, saying your were there, even a pic of you/paperwork/dated bkk post. so not fined 2000 when udon office opens.

good luck
You guessed it, they know nothing about "transferring" a retirement visa. "You go Nong Khai,
wynnsiensheng....i would of simply let the retirement visa expire, then did a laos run, instead of a phuket run, and simply reapplied for retirement visa in udon when open.

agrre w/jackspratt, don't try the laos run without visa as a friend of mine did, got caught, as mentioned, too easy, and was sent back to get laos visa. though he did say it worked a couple times in the past, oops. really not worth the risk if you live here, might catch someone on a really bad day.

JJ you can still go to Nong Khai. Just because immigration moved, you are not banned from the city. :D

I like NK But I like to go there on my own terms and time schedule. Just last Sunday my wife and I, on the spur of the moment, went up to see the new aquarium. Well worth the trip. Plus, I like to take my wife along, but she has to take off work during the week, an inconvenience. It will be nice to just pop over to the local Udon office (once we find out where it is and verify that it is actually open) :-k and take care of business, and then the NK visits will be for pure pleasure.

When I did my 90 day report in July(the 27th to be exact) they told me the Udon office would be open in "two months". I figured this was Thai time so expected it around the end of the year. But as it seems to be imminent, maybe I am going to be pleasantly surprised. =D>

So it seems MALC has now cleared up the issue (not that he clouded it in the first place).

He simply needs a re-entry permit, because he is going back to enjoy the 1 quid 25p breakfasts at asda:

asda do a breakfast for 1-25. ill be on em in 2 weeks time.
No need to over-complicate things with issues such as crossing into Laos or not :D

So whats my best course of action? My non-imm 'O' retirement visa expires on Sept. 19. It's becoming pretty obvious that the Udon office won't be open in time.

Can I go into Laos and apply for a multiple entry non-imm 'O' visa or can(will) they issue me an extension of my current retirement visa (can they even do that) :? This is getting confusing to say the least. For the past 3 years its been a routine piece of cake; now this  . Anyway where is the Thai Embassy located on the Laos side?

Color me:

LDB, Extensions to your current/existing visa have to done inside Thailand. New Visas outside Thailand. Therefore if you wish to extend your current retirement visa (surely the better option) it should be done in Nong Khai Immigration office, ensuring you take all the relevant documents with you. Go before well the renewal date. ;)

arjay, thanks for the reply. My understanding is that currently the Nong Khai imm office is refusing to handle extensions but instead telling the applicant to use the Udon Thani office. So I'm screwed it seems. Perhaps I should just try for a non-imm 'O' multiple entry visa in Laos? I have a feeling they won't give me one as my home country is the US and I *think* you have to apply in your home country to get the multiple-entry visa.

LDB, I understand that Nong Khai Immigration now realise that the new Udon Office is not yet open. Go to Nong Khai..asap. I extended my Retirement visa there less than 2 weeks ago.

See my post (the Sept 3rd 10.14am) here:

i would do as you normally would, go to NK to renew, asap. let NK tell you they won't renew, not forumites, who have been told by friends. until on udon office opens, it is their responsibility. if they refuse renew, go over whoevers head, and ask them.

worst case, they don't renew, since a retirement visa and quite easy to get in country, i would simply do a laos run, until udon office opens. hopefully they would just renew, but if not, easy to start a new one.

My understanding (as of Sept. 9) is that NK imm. office will not process extensions. Tomorrow (Monday) I will have my wife call the NK office and see if their stance has changed.

i personally would take the day off, go NK in person and have the deny me in person. then ask for a free extension, as they give while waiting for marriage extension. since it is not you that is making you late. make sure you see the top dog, before leaving without extension. have lunch BBB or NY bisto, or nice sugar fix at Rudy's. relax by river for lunch, make a day of it.

much easier to tell someone no on the phone than in person. since yours expires in couple days, i can't imagine them refusing to extend, that will take them to a new low. i still like it when Mr Happy ran the place. i'll see if udon is better in February for retirement renewal. actually hoping mr happy is boss man in udon, always treated prompt and efficient when paperwork is properly prepared.

If they tell my wife on the phone "no can do" then I'll probably just *move* to my in-laws address and make the drive to Loei. Then, just before 90 day reporting time I'll *move* back to Udon (if the Udon office is processing by then  ).

Did I mention......wow this sucks.

LoveDaBlues, it is so unfortunate this thread got started in the first place. People should not start threads about such serious matters, because they heard something from a 'friend'. It has caused problems and issues with a few of us, that took this as fact. Like Jack Webb used to says on Dragnet, "just the facts, Mam, just the facts".
UdonExpat wrote:A friend from Udon has reported that he went to Nong Khai immigration yesterday and was told that he could not use that office any more as the Udon Thani office, at the police station, is now open.
The problem is with the words, "could not use that office any more". I suspect they did not refuse him service that day, but meant, IN THE FUTURE....after Udon opens.

IT IS BUSINESS AS USUAL AT NONG KHAI IMMIGRATION. ALWAYS HAS BEEN. (Until the Udon office opens).

Mainer, I think you're right, this whole thread started from a mis-communication. I can understand that, the wife and I have one or two of those every week it seems.

Anyway, I'll be going to NK on Thursday with all papers in order. No major problems in the past and not expecting any this time. [-o<

A friend of mine renewed his one-year extension at 1pm, on Friday Sept. 11 at the Nong Khai office. No problems, in & out in less than thirty-minutes.

That's more good news; seems to confirm this whole issue was mis-information. No harm done; other than a few missed heartbeats. 8-[

Happy to report this. Thursday, Sept. 17 went to NK imm. for my 1 year extension. Things went very well as usual. In fact, I converted from RETIREMENT visa to MARRIAGE visa. I have to go back to NK in one month as normal with the marriage visa.

Just read this thread front to back for the first time. Don't know why I bothered!

Just hope Mr Happy stays put in NK after the Udon opening. =D>

EDIT: Can someone give me their best guess where it will be Google map co-ords would be great. Thanks.

Current rumor: they were unhappy with the original location (skanky, leaking roof, etc.) and are currently looking for another location.
