Plaudits to Southgate for having the guts to drop Rooney. =D> Although Rooney is Englands leading goalscorer,I can only recall him doing well in one of the major tournament finals and that was when he burst on the international scene as an exciting 18 year old talent in Euro 2004.
Those days are long gone.A lot of his goals have come in easy qualifiers and he's not been worth his place for a couple of years now.
Same with Manchester United, where he has been a great player, but time has caught up with him and he no longer has any pace and his close control skills have deserted him.
Cant see another Premiership or decent European team wanting him.....maybe one last big pay off in America or China ?
But then again,he's on 300k GBP a week till 2019 at United thanks to Moyes,so why should he go anywhere ? :(

Wayne Rooney: England captain in a 'difficult period' as he is dropped

England captain Wayne Rooney says he is in a "difficult period" after he was dropped for Tuesday's World Cup qualifier against Slovenia.
Interim manager Gareth Southgate said the decision was tactical and not a reflection of the forward's form.
Rooney, who was booed by sections of the Wembley crowd during Saturday's 2-0 win over Malta, has not started Manchester United's past three matches.
The 30-year-old said there was "no embarrassment" in being on the bench.
Rooney will retain the captaincy but Liverpool midfielder Jordan Henderson will be the on-field skipper on Tuesday.
The United player is England's record scorer with 53 goals in 117 appearances, but has netted one goal in 12 games for club and country this season.
"My game now? Of course, I'm not denying it is in a difficult period. I've been on the bench the last few games for Manchester United but that's part of football," said Rooney, who is England's most-capped outfield player.
"I have to work hard and when I'm needed for both club and country, I'll make sure I'm ready."
Tottenham's Eric Dier will replace Rooney in midfield against Slovenia

Germany are firmly in charge of Group C, 2 points clear of second placed Azerbaijan. Northern Ireland are a further 3 points behind in 3rd. Norway managed to get their first points on the board with their home defeat of whipping boys, San Marino. The Czech Rep are languishing in 5th. with just 2 draws to show for their efforts.
I did think that it was a hard task for Northern Ireland to qualify out of this group but am totally surprised that it is Azerbaijan keeping them at bay.

Montenegro's defeat of Denmark at home is enough to keep them top on goal difference. Second placed Poland rather limped to victory at home to Group whipping boys Armenia, but it was enough as 3rd. placed Romania could only get a goalless draw in Kazakhstan & are now a couple of points off the pace.

England do enough in a very lucky away draw in Slovenia to remain 2 points clear at the top. Lithuania slip above Slovenia on goal difference into second spot. A bad night away for Scotland sees them start to struggle a further point behind in 4th. place. That while rumours abound that the manager has lost interest in the job. A cynic might say that you can hardly blame him.. :D

England are very lucky they are in such a weak group........a mid-table Championship side would probably qualify from that lot ! =;

France ease by Sweden as the first 2 in Group A clash. It gives France a 3 point lead at the top while giving Holland a sniff at second place - they are currently 3 points behind Sweden, but have a game in hand.

Germany continue to dominate Group C as they stuff poor San Marino. Northern Ireland produce a very good home result against formerly second placed Azerbaijan to move above them. The Czech Republic beat Norway to be 2 points further back as Norway's poor qualification continues.
group c.png
group c.png (12.42 KiB) Viewed 1673 times

Poland's good away win puts them 3 points clear at the top of Group E as previous joint leaders, Montenegro, suffer a bit of a surprising loss to away to previously pointless Armenia. Denmark are now just a point out of second spot after their win against new bottom side, Kazakhstan.

Comfortable win for England keeps them top by 2 points as second placed Slovenia rather stumple to just a 1 goal win against pointless Malta. Slovakia have an easy home win to keep the pressure on for second spot. Scotland now need a minor miracle to qualify out of the group.

The Republic have a great away win in Austria, while Wales fall to a last gasp leveler at home. Close to say who will eventually be 1 & 2 in Group D.
group d.png
Israel beating Albania puts them 3rd. Group G is still all about Spain & Italy though..
group G.png
Iceland can't keep their magic going away to group leaders Croatia. Ukraine take over second spot, but it is still very close at the top.

France in charge in Group A, but it is still between Holland, Sweden & Bulgaria for the second spot..
group a.png
The Swiss score half the goals of the two other group b home sides against minnows the Faroe Islands, but this is very much a group of 3 with a chance & 3 no hoppers. Portugal & Hungary will battle it out with them for qualification.
group b.png
Group H should be Belgium's & they keep up their perfect record with a home thumping of poor Estonia. Greece & Bosnia-Herzegovina battle it out for second..

Excellent update Bob. A stunner from lukas Podolski in Dortmund puts Gareth Southgate's challenge into perspective. Better not mention Scotland's home draw with Canada, good to see Naisy on scoresheet. England played 3-4-3 will that continue on Sunday?

The nil nil draw not a great qualifying result for either Ireland or Wales.
Ireland slip into second place to Serbia on goal difference, Wales are 3rd, from Austria by the same measure. It was always going to be a difficult group for both to qualify out of but Wales are probably reliant on mistakes by the top 2 to do so now, being 4 points off the pace.

Spain & Italy still dominate group G. The former leading the group by a goal difference margin that has now stretched to 8. The draw between them are the only dropped points by either side though!!

Croatia brush aside Ukraine to continue their march towards Russia as group I winners.
Iceland take advantage of that situation by beating Kosova away to slip into 2nd. spot.
Despite their last night's win, Turkey are struggling to make much of an impression on the group & are 5 points off the leaders..

France looking in control of Group A as the Dutch lose the plot away in Bulgaria. Holland sink to 4th. in the table & in serious danger of missing out on qualification. Sweden slip into second place but there are only 3 points between 2nd. & 4th.

A bad night for Hungary in group B as they are beaten away in Portugal. Switzerland head the group from Portugal by 3 points with Hungary now 5 points further back from the Portuguese.

Poor draw for leaders Belgium in Group H against second placed Greece.
Qualification is a 3 horse race in the group with Bosnia-Herzegovina just a point behind the Greeks in 3rd. spot..

Germany firmly in charge of group C maintaining a perfect record. However Northern Ireland continue to punch well above their weight & their defeat of Norway puts them 2 points clear in second place.

Poland are 6 points clear at the top of Group E but it is a real dogfight for second spot with only Kazakhstan looking out of the race. 2 sides on 7 points & the other 2 on 6 points it is the most open of all the groups.

England have few issues against an ultra defensive Lithuania & are comfortably on top of the table. The Scots (next up for the English) do themselves & England a huge favour in defeating previously second place & undefeated Slovenia. Scotland remain 4th. though & still need something special in order to qualify..

England play Scotland in a qualifier at Hampden Park on 10 June & then have a meaningless friendly against France on 13 June.

Squad..
Jack Butland (Stoke), Fraser Forster (Southampton), Joe Hart (Torino, on loan from Man City), Tom Heaton (Burnley); Ryan Bertrand (Southampton), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Nathaniel Clyne (Liverpool), Aaron Cresswell (West Ham), Ben Gibson (Middlesbrough), Phil Jones (Man Utd), Chris Smalling (Man Utd), John Stones (Man City), Kieran Trippier (Tottenham), Kyle Walker (Tottenham); Dele Alli (Tottenham), Eric Dier (Tottenham), Adam Lallana (Liverpool), Jesse Lingard (Man Utd), Jake Livermore (West Brom), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Arsenal), Raheem Sterling (Man City); Jermain Defoe (Sunderland), Harry Kane (Tottenham), Marcus Rashford (Man Utd), Jamie Vardy (Leicester).

No Wayne Rooney is the only 'surprise' - or natural progression as it is exceedingly doubtful he will be on the plane to Russia,,,

The Qualifiers are back on the road before the International players can get their feet on the beach!!
score.png
Group A.png
Sweden go top of Group A & level on points with France..
Holland get their act on the road with new manager Dick Advocaat but it was only against group whipping boys Luxembourg. They still have a mountain to climb to qualify..
Group B.png
Switzerland & Portugal now look pretty comfortable as the qualifiers as 3rd. spot chasing side, Hungary, suffered a bewildering loss against lowly Andorra. The visiting Magyars had nearly three quarters of the possession but fell behind after 25 minutes & couldn't respond..
Group H.png
Belgium look comfortably in command of Group H as the chasing pair, Bosnia-Herzegovina & Greece, can only play out a goalless draw..

Tonight!!!

Group C.png
Germany strolling away with Group C, but another magnificent night for Northern Ireland. Yes it was only 1 goal (very late on) against lowly Azerbaijan, but it was away from home & their hosts are above Norway in this group. Their probable rivals for second place, Czech Republic, could only draw away in Norway to add further gloss to NI.
Group E.png
Poland still solidly in charge of Group E, With the 3 top sides all winning, no real changes to report. Montenegro continue to have just the goal difference advantage over Denmark.
Group F.png
Real 'end of season' display from table toppers England. Gareth might look at it that way & so that might save some of the England squad for the future, but, the last 6 minutes aside, this was a dire game with absolutely nothing to delight a fan of football.
Elsewhere, the 2 'S's' won to ensure this is not the very easy group it should be for England to qualify from...

Group D.png
No one wanted to win a game in Group D.. :D
Creditable result away to the leaders by Wales, but, as far as qualification goes, a poor one as well.
The Republic fail to capitalise as well & so remain locked on points at the top.
Group G.png
Spain & Italy continue their march towards Russia. The only real decision in Group G is who is going to win it out of the 2, with Spain 4 goals to the good in difference even after yesterday's results..
Group I.png
Huge win for Iceland against the leaders of Group I sees them go joint top.
However this is just about still the most competitive of all the Groups & as Ukraine & Turkey also both win away from home they are locked in 3/4 place just 2 points behind the joint leaders..

That is it for this round of qualification games with just some worthless friendlies taking place preventing players hitting the beach...

Didn't really know where to post this but, because it impacts on England in Russia 2018,put it here. :-k

"Wayne Rooney has retired from international football after turning down the chance to be part of the England squad for next month's World Cup qualifiers.
The Everton striker, England's all-time leading scorer, was asked by national coach Gareth Southgate to be involved in the games against Slovenia and Lithuania." BBC Sport
