Venomous Snakes of Udon Thani

Identification? As usual, dogs were on to this intruder last evening. Sadly despatched, but near to the house, noise, messing about in the darkness etc. The dogs appeared to be more wary than usual. Wife said it was 'hissing' at them.

Hissing and moore wary the usuall...me thing young Cobra..had one myself 2 month ago..dogs wary..and seems that they knew they should NOT try to kill it...But did you see any markings that would indicate that it was a Cobra ?

REMEMBER it's mating season for snakes now..be careful..

I look the belly pattern and it looks like to be a individual Cobra. Head scales also fits. Only one meter and so a very small one.

A sort of mid-green colour on top, I'd suggest, paler under - yellow/white? No very distinctive markings like some snakes, although I think you can make out a diamond?-shaped marking at intervals along the side of the body.

maybe some type of rat snake-( indo - china rat snake) they come in many different variations

Nguu hau chang. Not so clear patterns, but cobra yes and 95% sure that a individual. Maybe different light could give better color, but anyway it is cobra and it means that never mind which one -it is a nasty one.

Cobras will take off the other way when confronted or stumbled upon, they are not super aggressive as what is made out on this forum, best to leave them be, they will move on.

Probably spitting cobra - Naja siamensis. Was it found in Udon?

Maybe why the dogs were keeping wary?

Father-in-law thought a cobra too. I'd happily watch and let snakes slip away, but it's a different scenario when the dogs discover them and there's a chance they'll slither into the house, car or other hideaway.

Just a heads up here. My eldest dog has been fairly lethargic(I thought just the heat), but now I've noticed eyes are very red. I suspect that the snake may have spat venom. Getting advice from vet. But, if you have to deal with a snake, wearing goggles/glasses may be wise too. I tend to keep a good distance with the help of a 3 metre long bamboo pole!

We were enlarging a pond and making a road from the main road to the pond. The dump truck dumped a load and out came a snake. The Thais scattered. I didn't know what it was until I got home and looked it up. It was an easily identified Blue Krait. The snake was pretty rattled from being dug up and them dumped from the truck. I could have easily killed it because it moved very slowly. I don't like to kill any snake.

The only other dangerous snake I have been close to was a individual Cobra. An old wives tale says that snakes don't like lemon grass. I would dispute that. I was walking around one of our other farm ponds. I came close to a big patch of lemon grass and this snake stood up very tall indeed. It scared me and I backed up so fast that I fell on my butt. When I looked back the snake had disappeared. I got up and saw it swimming across the pond. If it had been aggressive, it could have easily bit me.

We spotted this golden tree snake in our back yard today.......probably at its most vulnerable time for a cobra to come along and gobble him up. The snake has a toad halfway down its mouth......with the toad's internal gases creating a large bubble. Will the snake be able to eat it? Probably........unless that cobra comes along.

A timely reminder......I guess it's that time of year.A Siamese Russell's Viper (Thai: Ngu maeo saw) or one that looked like it,paid me a visit today.

I got my first kill for a while no idea what species a bit over two foot long but very thin it was in a small bush my only weapon was a pair of tin snips first attempt cut in in half the second I was able to remove the head no real distinct markings light colored underbelly black back.

our land is a veritable snake superhighway with snakes regularly transiting from a 5 rai overgrown field on one side to a rather swampy area (read lots of frogs) on the other side. Our dogs are the guardians of the property and brook no intruder vermin be it snakes, rats, mice or large toads.. Two of our three dogs, one a terrier type and one a "Maa Thai" of red color are very fast and team up to engage any snakes. The terrier got sprayed in the eye by a spitting cobra about two weeks ago. When we noted his shut eye I pried it open to see a mass of puss and inflammation. I rinsed it out with a bottle of sterile water and for good measure got the red dog too since one of his eyes was a bit weepy. We took the terrier to the Vet who administered two types of anti-inflammatory eye drops and gave him a antibiotic shot for good measure. When we got home from the Vet we searched around the house finding a large patch of blood on the driveway and nearby the very dead, very chewed up Cobra which was about 3 feet long but quite hefty..

This one appears to be a Ngu Singh which is supposed to be non-poisonous.. Its well over 2 meters long...

Aside from seeing snakes when the dogs do battle with them, I very rarely see them when I'm working in the yard. No doubt they are there, but stay out of my way. In the last two months I'd say the dogs have taken on at least 8 snakes that I know of, killing most with a few getting away... The largest was about 2.5 meters long and probably was non-poisonous although the Red Dog (Tiny is his name) can be seen with the snake striking but I could find no wound later..

This one was a bit scary to find laying beside the house twitching and almost dead. A banded Krait.. Not large but very very poisonous...

Wow fantastic camera shot.
You have a really good team there.
Once you hear the frogs croaking keep an eye out.
Occasionally in the paddies adjacent to our land you'll hear the death croak of the frogs once they are captured and devoured in the rice.
And sometimes at the front door.
