cheap charlie

Post by biscuitz » March 12, 2010, 2:54 am

well i think i consider myself one & dont care really, just being carefull now with the £ being so low, im not a balloon chaser but i do look for bars that offer a fair price for my baht, also these lady bars asking 70baht for a beer & 120baht per lady drink & 300 baht bar fine & it seems a 1000baht for her, ( thats $50 & theres a recession on ) but i am in pattaya ( not for long tho ).. but these bars are empty.. except some bars that offer 40baht a bottle or 2 for 75 baht til 8 or 10pm (all full early doors).. well best to geta my take aways from maccys ds or 7-11 if u chat her up nice & she likes u hey, i am single, but just cannot be arsed wiv lady bars anymore, will leave it to the 30 day tourist to blow his doh, which is dwiddling here in pattaya fast

nah not at all, dont mind buying the 1st round as long as im not buying the last one as well, anyways heres another one for you.... i just popped in to this bar for a couple of drinks & the bin came to 80 baht so i gave the lady a 100 & asked her for coins in change, she came back with a 20 baht note expecting me to say keep the note so im paying 25% tip, so i took the 20 baht note to the cashier & changed it for 2 x 10 baht coins put one on the tray & the other in me pocket, ( im a cheap charlie & proud of it ) since the £ dropped to 47 baht :D

You have got to be kidding me, no tip is better than doing that. I bet you were jumping for joy when you woke up the next morning and found that 10baht coin still in your pocket. What you did makes me cringe and the locals laugh at you because they really are not bothered about 10 or 20 baht, especially in pattaya. Anyway, what ever makes you happy.

You should have said bollox to the tip in the bar and given the cripple the 20 baht note, he/she needed it more than a bar girl working in pattaya needs a 10 baht coin.
OT's opinion only.

I would never have asked for two 10 baht coins.
If the waitress brought me a 20, I pocket it, smile, and move on (I won't give a 30% tip for opening my bottle).
If she brought me two 10 coins, I'd give her one. If she showed me her wares, I'd go downright crazy and give her the WHOLE twenty baht (60 cents).

Philanthropists like me don't come along very often.

747 - It depends what part of the world you are sitting in, where I am right now a handicapped person is called a cripple. I am fully aware that in the UK you expected to call handicapped people something else.
moving on, what's that luis guy going on about, any idea? is it on subject? can he be reminded by the mods that this is an English speaking forum.
Biscuitz - next time you pass a cripple on the streets of Pattaya can you give him 100 baht from me and I'll give it back to you when I buy you a beer in Udon, and don't worry about the tip, I'll sort out the 10baht.

As it happens Aardy, the "well fit bird" came over to OT's place last night. I don't consider myself as a cheap charlie, so I get her whatever she wants within reason.
If I was in Thailand and for just the briefest of moments I considered splitting a 20 baht note I would go down to Bangkok and jump off the Thaksin bridge into the river with 50kg of concrete tied around my waist, alternatively go back to work.

"yep , the thai expects that a farang should leave a tip ..,"
One wonders whether that's the effect of too many people dropping money on the table when it's really not necessary. Usually it's easy to tell when a tip is reasonable......nice setting, atmosphere, clean, good service, good food.....you'll see the Thais at other tables leave a reasonable tip (much less than what I'd leave in the US for the same standards). When it's a party at a restaurant or some special occasion and we require something extra from the staff, sure, they'll get a nice tip.
I categorize the tip effect with the same effect we'd see if folks start going to government offices (driver's license, immigration, etc) and try to get around the rules or speedier service by putting a blue note under the table.
