Check out the Arimana Hotel at Patong. Fairly new hotel, good breakfast, small swimming pool, reasonable price, friendly staff. Stayed there for a week last year with my Udon girl-friend. Try to get a balcony room at the front of the hotel, nice views of the hills. Night market around the corner, restaurants and shops not far, and not near the beach, but can be walked to if you want. I would stay there again if we went back. Google Arimana. Cheers, Frank

have a look at www.sawadee.com . it is a booking ageant and has a big list of hotels for phuket , prices from modest to expensive. there are reviews on the hotel from guests , sometimes two reviews , one will praise and the other will rubish it,

If you are looking for something a little further away from the madness, have a look at this place http://www.patongrairumyen.com/

Its up on the mountain road (hassipee road). Have stayed there a couple of times with the wife and baby and found it to be spot on.

Theres a pool, sauna, small fishing pond and they do decent food, there is also a gym should you feel the need for a workout. Gung and Tin (the owners) are really nice and will always run you down the hill into Patong.

We will definatley be staying there again.

A late addition:

The Patong Sunbeach is up on a hill and very reasonable, pricewise.
