Thank heaven for 7-11...
If Bangkok goes under
Good question Maaka - Murphys law of expats will tell one never to take anything for granted and be prepared for the worst. Should the Internet in fact fail and no back up system available a domino effect will for sure be a fact. Shutting down the ATM/Bank system and well basicaly the hole administrative system ( within FROG this already seems to be a fact ) for a uncertain time will for sure later show up in the crime rate statistics wherever this happens localy or nationaly. It would maby not be a bad idea to have a bit cash at hand and then have a plan B. - Lao and a functionally bank system (if they let us cross the Kong now the Inet has gone bye bye...

Has anyone heard of any threat to Suvarnaphum Airport?
If Bangkok goes under
As I understan it is declared safe and they are digging extra canals around it. They will surely not finish that in time if the flood will reach the airport this time. There is an evacuation plan for the Thaiair planes relocating for U-tapao and other dry useable airports in land but what about all the other carriers scedulled - this can only end up in mahem so better lay back and watch and if going in ry get hand in a hydroplane

And for the Nokair travelers, any news on Don Muang Airport and the difficulties getting there?

If Bangkok goes under, there may be shortages of non-essentials and imports, but I expect we will be mostly unaffected. I've already whispered my thank yous to the Thaksin administrator for building all those canals around Udon, making all the rain a non-event for us!

Apparently the airport itself has just been reinforced with 10,000 sand bags and should be okay. However the road outside may be difficult. Just watched the TV news and the Future Park, not much further away on the same road, is totally flooded and the police are complaining about people parking their cars on the elevated motorway, to escape the water . So it sounds a bit chaotic outside . :-"pompui wrote:And for the Nokair travelers, any news on Don Muang Airport and the difficulties getting there?
Ageing is a privilige denied to many .
If Bangkok goes under
Update on my last post. Thai TV are now showing the airport itself to be surrounded by water, but even more worrying I should think, there are literally thousands of refugees from the flood camped inside the buildings .Couldn't quite make out what building they are in though, so it may not be the domestic terminal .

I heard this morning that there was concern over the airport, thas why I started the thread, because I kept hearing the words of the babe whos coming to her brothers wedding, but apparently according to some Thai bigwig, the airport has its own huge pumps, and should be ok, but if she is surrounded by water now, it will be a hard task keeping the waters at bay..
it may pay the wedding lady to have a backup plan if things continue, or the terminus becomes waterlogged..perhaps fly into Phon Pen, and from there to Laos and road the rest of the way..
there is going to be alot of poor and angry people after this, so keep your head down..Those Isaan people working in Bangkok, may well have lost thier jobs now due to the factory going under..its a testing time for the new PM

Starting to see shortages here in Ban Dung now. Our Tesco's shelves are less than 50% stocked and has even run out of plastic shopping bags and is buying them from the local vendors. Both 7-11s are not fairing much better.KHONDAHM wrote:ROFL! You got that right!writemotive wrote:Thank heaven for 7-11...

Yes I noticed a lot of shortages in Tesco's last night, the whole isle of bottled water was empty and quite a few shelves with nothing on them. Builders merchants like Global and Home Pro are running out of stock like cement and tiles.Bandung_Dero wrote:Starting to see shortages here in Ban Dung now. The wife and I flew out of Don Muang this morning. We traveled by taxi from Sukhumvit/Ploenchit area to the airport. As previously noted, lots of vehicles parked along the expressway and ramps. They are not abandoned, just parked on higher areas. The ramp going into Don Muang has cars parked on two sides with just a single lane down the middle for moving traffic to access the terminal entrance.
The domestic terminal is an emergency staging area and we went to the old international terminal to get our boarding passes and our flight was out of gate 24 which is in old international fights section. All domestic airlines were operating okay this morning but lots of passengers. Much relieved that we are back home in Udon rather than being in Bangkok.

My wife reports all veggies and fruits in plentiful supply at the kilo 18 market last night and at the Nongwahsaw market today. 7-11 still has slurpies and plenty of instant noodle soups on the shelves, so the teenage population doesn't appear to be under any threat....yet.

If Bangkok goes under
From what i understand watching Thai TV (channel 7) Don Muang can be under water.....they say today is a risky day for that area. Suvvarnapum has dubbel walls, but from what i say about flooding untill now.......water is stronger then the walls they built........so....whats happens is accely written in the stars. I rthink today is a criticall day for BKK.pompui wrote:And for the Nokair travelers, any news on Don Muang Airport and the difficulties getting there?
regards Kjell
These days life seems pretty good and I eagerly look forward to the continuation!
If Bangkok goes under
in Central Bangkok (top of Sukhumvit/Ploenchit) Banks and other businesses have built sandbag walls by their entrances, even when they are over a meter above street level. I reckon this has to be "worst case" planning but if they had a meter plus of water down Sukhumvit/Ploenchit it certainly would be a disaster. In Central BKK many of the big grocery stores are out of water/mama noodles/Thai milk and other staples.. Many Thai middle class co-workers living in the suburbs have taken off from work to prepare their homes for the coming flood...

If Bangkok goes under
It was very eerie driving to work this morning, the roads here were exceptionally quiet.
My usual 1 hour ++ journey only took me 35 minutes today, which was a nice touch.
The Khlong that runs alongside this industrial area, looked very low compared to other journeys I have made in to work this week, but it's been pretty dry for a few days.
All U-Turn points on the Bangna-Trad Expressway (and most other Expressways) are loaded with vehicles, parked up to avoid any potential problems.
But the Police are trying their hardest to remove them as they are a massive hazard, and there are a number of proper safe havens for locals to leave their vehicles in the area.
I would say around 30-40% of the factories here are closed or running with limited staff numbers, this could of course be attributed to the fact that it's a holiday weekend.
The roads in this area are still dry, but large build up's of water along with 'bubbling' drains can be spotted all over town, usually quite short lived, but it gives you an idea that the water level is very high surrounding the city.
The factory I work in is located about 20km's due South of Suvarnabhumi airport in Bangphli Yai, Samut Prakan.
Still fully functional, and operating as normal, other than the fact we now have a sand bag wall just over .5M high surrounding us.
Official reports are a nightmare, each new update just contradicts with the last, so best taken with a pinch of salt imho.
If the locals are correct, they're expecting something to happen on next Monday or Tuesday.
Based on what we know so far, it sound's like they are trying to force the water East towards the airport (should not effect the airport operating though), but if they manage this, the water will could end up running towards my factory at quite a rate of knots through the surrounding waterways which will cause absolute mayhem, I'm guessing similar to what we're currently seeing in the regions North of Bkk.
There are currently a number of Distribution Centres (Tesco Lotus/Makro/Big C/7-Eleven) closed, hence the reason stock replenishment for stores all over the country will be a bit hit and miss over the coming weeks.
I have just received another SMS Update Stating:
All I can add, is my fingers are crossed...
