For spit roasting a pig in Thailand you don't need to spend too much on the equipment required. In fact it can be done free of charge if you tell the Thai fellas to sort it out. Here is an example of how it's done (not OT's pic) and I had the same kind of set up when I roasted a 70 kiloer.
You do need a reel of wire and pliers, the rest of the equipment will be assembled using anything a creative Thai mind can find.

Spit roasts are cheap as chips. 50% bar fine and 50% tip with a mate. But that's another story. No equipment required.

Socky I never looked for the 50/50 cut with a mate, I always wanted to be the meat in the sandwich at that BBQ. 200% costs, no problem.socksy wrote:Spit roasts are cheap as chips. 50% bar fine and 50% tip with a mate. But that's another story. No equipment required.
Oh yeah back on topic, I went to the "quick fire BBQ" exhibiton at Chern Chim some time back and when needed in the future will choose them. Good solid S/S product.

I'm a firm believer in that you usually get what you pay for. I bought Quickfire BBQ quite a few years ago. My wife complained because they are pretty expensive. I think mine will outlive me. Guess who uses it the most? If you guessed my wife, you guessed correctly. I couldn't imagine pan frying a steak. Steaks, pork chops, hamburgers, ground pork and especially chicken is done to perfection.
I have never done a whole hog but if I ever do, I will certainly hire the expert Thai guys. I have been to hog roasts and a few bottles of Lao Kao will keep the hand turned spit turning. They seem to enjoy the roasting and it is more like a party.

Same principle as O/T, but a little more sophisticated.
This one has had plenty of use at Ban Spratt. Manufactured by some local handymen for a total of about 500 baht.

I got 2 of mine from http://QUIK-FIRE.com, their thread is here:
http://www.udonmap.com/udonthaniforum/g ... 8-135.html
One's bigger, for family / visitor cooking outside in the yard, -churns out well cooked food at warp speed, like 4 - 8 burgers at once, then the steaks, etc etc. The cover makes for way better flavour retention / seasoning options.
The other one we have is a bit smaller & we use that for all family outings, easy loading into truck & back off again, easy to cook a lot of food, clean, close up & store. Beats having to caravan to a restaurant w/ extended family in tow.

I see no one has mentioned that Doc's BBQ's have an insulated lid.You can also bake things in them. Most other BBQ's lose all the heat out of the lid. That is if they even have a lid. I doubt that there is a finer BBQ built. You may pay more for the welded stainless steel construction, but you'll never regret it.
