Price of a Drink
Price of a Drink
Ventured to the local Mall today (I know its Saturday and I loath it) but had to take the daughter to singing lessons
She convinced me to take her to a certain venue for a refreshment, which we will call Store 1 .
Now I am not one to big on names of businesses being a former North American and seeing the commercialism that exists but ok lets see what it is like
Of course there was a line up so I gave her 200 baht just in case it was over 100 due the Capitalist establishment we were in. After her order she returned with my change. I wont spring it on you yet as to how much change I got as there is more to the story.
We ventured off to her lesson and I visited a less know comparable store Store 2 to order the same drink she had at the other place. Just a reminder this is all in the Mall and low and behold it was substantially less that Store 1
Now I pointed this out to my daughter and said all is not in a name for cost difference and one should be cost cautious
Store 1 COST 180 Baht
Store 2 COST 70 Baht
So as the Old Saying Goes "BUYER BEWARE"

Re: Price of a Drink
Here is a comparison I put forward
Shop 1 had what I call a ' Post Mix " drink - ( Soda and syrup added ) , with the cup full of ice and then the drink filled that way, looks full, feels heavy , Ice does that. The ice as we know bulks the drink up, effectively you getting about 20% of the container full of the drink.
( The Colonel, The Individual and Ronald )
Shop 2 was a bottled or canned drink, ( chilled and straw provided ?? )
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
In Australia a good friend of mine services Post Mix machines for the Coke / Pepsi / Schweppes mobs
In the trade there, its accepted that Post Mix drinks with ice have a 1000% mark up , totally different flavour as well IMO.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Branding and Consumer behaviour is alive and well all over the world.

I don't know if one of the stores was Starbucks. But I can say their fraps are the best in town.

Give her weekly pocket money and make her use her brain. When its gone its gone . She will learn. Throwing money at her will teach her nothing.

Re: Price of a Drink
To be fair skinner I think Doodoo has started the learning lessons with his daughter on spending. He did mention this when he pointed the price difference to her.
He has actually made me think about next time when out and about in the mall. I, like a lot of blokes here, though infrequently are alone with our perhaps step daughters/daughters in the shops and will spoil them and buy things without thinking of cost, that is one of my faults. I enjoy spending one on one time taking my daughter to sport and out of school lessons and usually buying a treat. It is her mother who emphasizes the need to be aware if costs. I am always being given a dirty look when we come home reveal what I bought her. I just enjoy being a dad and at times think to heck with small item costs.

Re: Price of a Drink
Thanks Skinner but she is 6 years old and we are in the advanced stages of learning
This story was just a general heads up to all

Re: Price of a Drink
Sorry , I presumed a teenager , as I couldn't imagine a young child wanting a drink that costs 180 baht.
Re: Price of a Drink
For a 6 year old its not the cost, as she would not be aware of it as I wasn't
Again this story was for a general knowledge for all to understand the massive price differences in Udon

What it is like, is, Corporations amount to about 90% of all transactions world-wide now, and we are talking about 10 Corporations held by 1 to 4 families.
I try to support the "little guy"...he works harder and gives a better and SAFER product. And many times, for less money.
Example: LAYS CHIPS..25 ingedients, mostly toxic. "little guy" chips, potatoes, water and salt.
Same goes for all else..shoes, purses, belts..big Names are selling you "Pleather" (plastic leather) for the big bucks.
(I look for 2nd hand Craigslist, EBAY, its better quality and keeps more $ in your wallet)). Not trying to impress anyone.
And, the wife loves it too.
The 10tb Coconut Ice cream w/ mung bean on the street is really nice. Yes, I know its made with bad palm sugar, but its better than HIGH FRUTOSE corn surap w/ trans fats Corporations Ice cream.

Re: Price of a Drink
Absolutely correct Felix. Good post.
Re: Price of a Drink
I expect to pay more for an otherwise identical product when it comes with a clean, well-lit place to sit down, maybe some soft music and a few plants or flowers here and there. Air conditioning, parking spots, well-mannered and attentive staff also incur costs which might make the otherwise identical product more expensive.
If all I were interested in was cost, I'd buy from the flyblown ptomaine trolley manned by Larry the leper who hasn't washed his hands since the last time he stumbled into the klong. We have choices.
