My conclusion after reading these draught articles is that the Thai government, nationally and locally, has not invested in potential low-tech water management practices. Perhaps some low-cost remedies will soon be forthcoming.

Dont hold your breath TJ
I have a friend and he is in his 40's whos Father was here years ago trying to deal with the water management in Thailand. So we can say they have had 40 to 50 years to build resorvoirs pipelines and pump stations

The plans and money for the projects have always been available, but it gets misappropriated along the way, but that is the same the world over, perhaps more over here. An example is found in the UK's overseas aid , a billion pounds to help the people of Mozambique and the President gets his own private jet.

Dean Agreed out my way it's a disaster for the local farmers my wife was saying and no sign of getting better soon will be too late for this year anyway. These people have nothing and rely on the rice for their basic diet. I can't comment personally as I'm out of the country so rely on her for the news but seems very bad

Here just North of Udon June was wet enough, but July is definitely on the dry side. It has rained a bit today, but only a millimetre or two. And that is the first rain for 2 weeks. Unless it is totally dry the next 2 months, there will be a rice harvest, but then no water for the the cool season, when a lot of people grow vegetables .....

The biggest issue is when will the tap water run out. Huai Luang is pretty low. No village water these days. There is plenty of pond water in our village, maybe the village will need to build a new (and actually working) treatment plant.

But south and east of Udon have been drier.

Here, 50 kilometers south of Loei city, we had a lot of wind and a very heavy rain last night. The wife is planting rice today. This is the first time this year that here has been enough water. Some who planted earlier are starting over. The planted rice yellowed and died from lack of rain.

A couple years ago the government had a number of large excavators enlarge the local reservoir, probably five time as large and deep as it originally was. Everyone in the area had all the free dirt that they wanted. They are now digging pipelines for irrigation. One large pipeline is probably five kilometers from the reservoir. They are working on the water problem.

That's one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.
