Choosing a bank
Choosing a bank
Hi All,
After the problems I had when The Bangkok Bank ATM system crashed, somebody sensibly suggested I have another bank account as a backup.
I went to Kasikorn bank in Phosi Rd today to open an account. They would/could not let me have open one, saying they only allow farangs to have an account if they are on a retirement visa. I have a 'O' visa based on marriage, not a marriage visa.
Can anybody suggest a bank that may not be so restricted?

I had a bumper sticker in Texas that read 'Beam me up Scotty'. I often wish I could find one in Udon Thani

Thanks guys, sounds like typical Thai, it all depends on who you talk to on the day.

Re: Choosing a bank
People saying they have already managed to open accounts with any Thai bank need to say when this account was opened as well as the branch. Things have changed and the new rules regarding needing work permits or retirement extensions, although maybe 3 years old, have only really started being enforced in that last 12-18 months.
Re: Choosing a bank
I had problems opening a second bank account in late 2018, took 5 attempts to find one who would do it. Back in September i wanted to open a time deposit (for immigration purposes) and although the bank said they COULD do it they made it bloody difficult (had to take a Thai bluebook holder as guarantor) and the actual process took 45 minutes.
Bloody ridiculous, could do in the UK in 5 minutes and online ......

Not sure if this is relevant, Whistler, but you went to the same bank and branch (Kasikorn, Phosi Rd.) where I had a problem with their management in 2013 - see the thread "800K Banking Facility" page2. Cheers, Tom

I wonder if they'll accept an Udon amphur-issued yellow book or pink ID card in lieu of the immigration letter?Cheese 2 Meat You wrote: ↑April 16, 2020, 1:31 pmkasikorn will open at central but you need a proof of address letter from immigration in udon thani 500baht to issue

I opened Foreign currency accounts at Central Plaza Branch.
By the way it is the only Kasikorn Branch in Udon where you can open such accounts.
I took my son & my yellow book with passport & Visa.
After a bit of discussion and the bank official talking to the Manager I was allowed to open the accounts.
I presume it is the same for a Savings account etc.
