Monthly Food and Household Items Budget

Post by Stantheman » June 11, 2020, 10:53 pm

I wanted to ask the forum members what they considerer an appropriate monthly budget for food and other household items such as cleaning supplies and hygiene items etc., alcoholic beverages need not be included as they are a big no no from my doctor. This would be in addition to going out to eat a few times a month which would be a separate budget item.

5K???? That wouldn't keep Mrs Dero in "sticky rice" for a month let alone feed me and step daughter, etc. Sure that is not a misprint Tam? I'm thinking 20K with 8K of that going into Makro and other various retailers in Udon each month.

Don't really have a budget as such but we seem to spend about 5k a week on food and household items including a fair proportion of farang type foods, 10k a month on utility bills and 5k monthly on running the motor, bit high because we don't live in town , that's just for two of us , not including alcoholic drinks or the wife's makeup .

2 visits to makro a month. Usually 4500 a trip. So that’s 9000. That’s included 2 x 20kg bags dog food and up to 15 chicken carcasses for the 3 dogs.
Eat out maybe once a week. So less than 4000 there.
Fuel for bikes and car. 3000
So that’s 16,000.
Plus 1500/month on badminton.
So easily just over 20,000 a month.
There is more expenses for what I consider non essentials so won’t get into beauty products etc for the missus and nearly 14 year old girl who sit in front of the mirror.
Got my new school uniforms / shoes to buy this week. ??????

That's quite inexpensive, and hard to believe, but I guess if you live on sticky rice and papaya it can be done.

Being a stats nerd, I've kept records for the past 5 years. Average is 10k for myself and girlfriend. We eat out 2 or 3 times a week and this adds another 8k

I am assuming you rent a small one bedroom, and have a scooter, not a car as your means of transport.

We don't eat out or do KFC, BK and the like with any regularity, maybe once a month or longer. Breakfast is coffee with either croissant or brownie. Cereal maybe twice, three times a week. Cooked brekky maybe once a week. Mrs tam cooks local food most nights, I do my 'speshun' dishes maybe twice a week: nothing exotic, spag bol, burgers, haggis or pepperoni pizza, etc.. On nights when nobody feels like cooking, it's a local takeaway job, pad krapow, khao moo daeng, khao mun gai, etc.. Lunch/brunch is typically a reheat of something from dinner the night before. If anyone is peckish in the afternoon, takeaway kwetiao, somtam or pad Thai if a bit more hungry.

Absolutely Barney, and that is without what I call essential for me .15K /each month on golf probably the same or slightly less for beers etc. Tam's 5K was just his usual wind up. I budget about 60K/month so I am not just existing. That includes 4 dogs and a FIL who lives with us and the wife's contributions to her Mum and Buddha. 5/10K where you come from Tam, Aberdeen???

All that on 10k a month impressive, you are living a low income Thais lifestyle, but to each his own. I wish my wife and child would be ok with that

Strange assumption but, no. I live in a 3 bed house and have a car and motorcycle. Dont really see how the size of my home or how many vehicles I run affects how much grocery shopping I do. Maybe you should read the original post!

Ours is 10 sometimes 15 baht for barbaqued pork in the morning, lots of fat
5-10 baht for sticky rice
so thats 25 baht
Lunch
Somtum home made and again sticky rice 50 Baht Outrageous 50 baht
Sticky rice 20 baht 20 baht

Dinner
Soup 40baht
Sticky rice 20 baht
TOTAL 155 Bhat

Now remember we were so poor growing up and back in the woods, I mean way way back my Mother had her first wood cook stove from knitting it out of steel wool

Someone broke into our house and left things

My Mother used to put half of us to bed and when we were asleep she would stand us up in the corner so the rest of us could go to bed
