Hard Timber Clear Coat

Post by mickojak » September 7, 2020, 4:18 pm

I've just finished a timber bench top and some bookshelves.
I've used a Beger stain and coat, which I'm happy with except the coating is not as hard as I would like.

In Australia I would have bought a marine grade timber floor coating, but not sure if anything like that is available here?

Can anyone advise/suggest a product for me?

Mick

Well after a few years hereunless the bench is kept completely out of the sun it will without doubt sewteriorate over a few years, so unless a glossy look is what you wish for , then probably something like Cuprinol wood stain which also includes protection against little nasties is preferable. You ner have to rub it down again , just recoat . WEith Stain and a gloss finish each and every time requires rubbing down and starting again.
This is my personal view, others I am sure will differ

All surfaces inside,

Thanks all.
Now I know what to ask for.
It's the terminology that F##ks you around here.

I'm sure "Marine Coat" would have "No Hab".

Polyurethane is hard wearing and can only be used inside and is not actually varnish that's the difference in translation

My go to for interior surface coating is the RTB water based polyurethane, it cures very fast so you can get a second coat in an hour or so. AFIK HomePro is the only supplier.

If the coating you used is an exterior one it is softer than the interior ones.

You should use a 220 ~ 400 grit paper to give a key to the surface and test on a sample surface.

I have been using it on about 3 square metres of surface today and only needed to stop to refill my container, by the time I had finished the first coat I was able to do the second without stopping, since I was spraying it it was going on very quickly.

There are exterior grade polyurethanes easily available, I have some in stock, they contain UV inhibitors and may well have a softer surface.

Man you should have seen me at Do Have the other week, looking for polyurethane. Do you think them young shop assistants understand..but after an hour of searching the paint section I finally found some, and lacquer, and varnish, end of the aisle of the wood stains..couldnt tell you if its high quality or not...but its there

I don’t know the product but from the brand and price it’s likely to be excellent.

One that I am going to use is Epifanes from this range https://eastmarineasia.com/collections/ ... q=Epifanes

The disadvantage of both of these are that they are not water based so have to be outside the living area for much longer than water based finishes and the recoat/drying time is a lot longer.

Basically price is a good guide to quality, though imported finishes will be more expensive than local without an equal increase in value.

We used to use a lot of American White Oak so we couldn't use water based anything, nothing worse than blue white oak 555

Thanks again for all the info.
That RTB Interior water based one looks the go.

I'll give it a try.

You can always use a coloured shellac first to give the colour you want, SWMBO wanted black so that’s what I did for these.

It goes on looking like milk then dries clear. They have both satin and gloss finish that is written in Thai on the white paper stick on label.

Once again, thanks everyone for your input here.
Mainly, thanks STW.
That RTB worked really well.
Went on easy and dried hard quickly.
Perfect solution.

I did mention that AFIK it’s only available from HomePro.
But I’ll be interested to know if anyone else has it.
