Two months in now & I’ve yet to read about any carnage as a direct result of this speed increase.

I’m beginning to think the nay sayers (you know who you are) were talking out of their ar$es

Well a month seems to have passed without incident & I haven't heard of any carnage predicted by the nay sayers.

Maybe, just maybe, the roads are safer than they are given credit for...........

Raised speed limit of 120 km/hr now in effect

The Nation

National
Mar 11. 2021

The Royal Gazette website on Wednesday published a transport ministerial regulation raising the speed limit on four lane highways or more from a maximum 90 km/hour to 120 km/hour.
Transport Minister Saksayam Chidchob said last month that “the new speed limit aimed to facilitate traffic flow in accordance with current traffic conditions while ensuring road users’ convenience and safety”.
The increased speed limit is applicable for roads/highways that have four or more lanes (two lanes for each direction, divided by median barriers) in a straight section with no intersections or U-turns at road level.
The speed limit for each type of vehicle is:
> Vehicles with less than 7 seats: maximum 120 km/hr
> Vehicles in the rightmost lane: minimum 100 km/hr
> Passenger vehicles of over 7 seats but less than 15 seats: maximum 100 km/hr
> Vehicles with more than 15 seats or weighing over 2,200 kilograms: maximum 90 km/hr
> Tricycles and tow trucks: maximum 65 km/hr
> Motorcycles: maximum 80 km/hr
> Motorcycles with engines of 400cc or more: maximum 100 km/hr
> School buses: maximum 80 km/hr.
In case highways/roads have traffic signs indicating minimum and maximum speeds, vehicle users must maintain speeds within this range, except for when it cannot be done due to traffic conditions or other appropriate reasons.

In other words the increased speed limit will not apply to highway 2 which has numerous street level u-turns.

^ yep
That was already established a few pages/months back.

It also won’t apply to HWY22, the 210, the 2263, Nittayo Road, Posri Road or Soi Sampan amongst others

Thais are mostly religious - often also superstitious - unfortunately rarely responsible - all too often they like to blame others.
"Brake failure" and "wet road" are often excuses when it comes to road accidents.
The sad reality - heaps of traffic fatalities - month after month.

But - Thais are also very pragmatic and creative.
Combined all together, a initiative of the "Thai Health's Road Safety Project" tries to bring about a change in behavior.

Ladies and Gentlemen - here it is:
- The first ever Monk Statue that warns you to be mindful and cautious while driving!

Sam wishes every success imaginable and hopes that the daily madness can finally be stopped.

Excellent news 👍
I’ve not read about any carnage caused by this raising of the speed limit so it’s good to crack on with improving road safety. Hopefully they’ll raise the speed limits on HWY22 towards Sakon Nakhon & HWY2 toward Khon Kaen soon.

As an aside, for information, the digital speed displays on Thahan Road only go to 99

Sorry to disappoint you but neither hwy 2 or 22 qualifies for the increased speed limits. Both roads have surface level U-turns which are prohibited according to the transport ministry.

They only display down to -99 kph if you're driving in reverse.

KP that's what happens when you have no enforcement of the rules/laws.
