A friend once mentioned he would write himself a check from his Canadian bank and deposited it in his Thai
bank. It took a couple weeks to clear but not much for charges.
Does that sound possible? Im returning in a month and thought that may be an easy way for a biggish transfer.

Otherwise I believe I can still take 10,000CDN cash with me?

Much easier and less expensive to use Transferwise to just transfer from Canadian account to Thai.

There are no limits to the amount of cash you can carry.

But there are limits to the amount of undeclared cash.

I do not have the Canadian requirements but they are to be similar to the U.K. ones

Under £1,0000 nothing

Between £1,000 and £9,999 you can be asked where the money is coming from, you can be required to provide proof of origin

Over £10,000 you must declare any money, lack of a declaration or unsatisfactorily explained origin is a prima-facie reason for detention of money

Plus I do believe you have to declare for Thai customs when entering the country, not sure of amount though.

I think cash or monetary instrument declarations worldwide are pegged at the US$10,000 or the equivalent thereof. Since it's been a while since I delivered a suitcase of wonga to Prince Charles, it could have all changed.

Got a message from Transferwise, fees going up:

I thought the import of US$20k (equivalent) was the limit but the Bank of Thailand regulations are quite convoluted with great gobs of cash permitted to walk across certain land borders while other destinations have a much lower amount. Here it says the import and/or export amount is unlimited but needs to be declared if exceeding 450,000 Baht or USD 15,000 or its equivalent.

The limits for different amounts for Thailand are variable and there have been variations both on import and export within the last 10 years. For non Thai cash import it has been $50,000, $20,000 & $15,000. However the recent drop (most websites have not changed the information to $15,000) is within the last couple of years. There is every likelihood that the cash declaration will change again. The declaration limits are as likely to go up as to go down.
