US Social Security Report

Post by fdimike » August 4, 2022, 6:00 pm

FYI: Americans receiving Social Security benefits may receive a letter from Social Security asking you to complete a questionnaire ( SSA-7162-OCR-SM ) and return it in the enclosed envelope. You MUST return the signed and dated original by mail as Federal Benefits Office in the PI will not accept an emailed copy. Failure to complete and return the form could result in having your benefits stopped according to the information provided.

And so it begins.

I'm not eligible for another five years, earliest. I've always suspected this socialist ponzi scheme would collapse before or during my years of eligibility. It's why I had no qualms about retiring at 42 and investing heavily on my own. I contributed to SS for less than 25 years, and much of that was low paid. I expect nothing or very little. I doubt I'm wrong. Now, SS refuses to give me an online account unless I have a US address. Why, SS? That was never the case in the past. The squeeze of this socialist three-card-monty has started. Of course, the coffin-dodging scumbag goats will gloat about it's success with little thought to the millions it has cheated. I don't give a toss.

I have lived here for 6 years and been sent this 3 times and one time it was over 90days from date mailed. I logged into my SS account and saw that my next payment was being held until I returned this form. I called SS and the person I talked to sent a PDF to my E-mail address I signed it, uploaded and sent back. She removed the hold and I got my money. I don't know why they can't just let you download a PDF form that can only be gotten if your logged into your account. You could sign and upload just like I did. Better yet have everyone overseas have to do this on their B-day every year that way you would not be worried if it's lost in mail and you not receive your monthly. They should also let retired overseas people do the same for Direct Deposit, at this time you have to call them.

On another F-U thing with SS, I also have a OPM retire account and they started requiring you to use a Login.gov to excess your account. At first I thought this going to suck but I like it. When you login it sends a push to my Thai phone no charges just like the Banks do here. Anyway I noticed that SS will let you use this Login.gov and I said great I'll reg my SS account but when you go to add your account with SS they ask you to enter your address but you can't if your address is overseas because it only accepts US addresses. What stupidly on there part. I have e-mailed them several times but no changes.

Anyway thanks Mike for starting a topic that let me B.. about SS Admin.

The good thing about SSA is that they send the 2FA to my email address. But I won’t have to worry about that for another 5 years until I reach 62.

I’m having to deal with OPM and TSP, which for OPM I use Login.gov but TSP doesn’t. And the new TSP website sucks.

So in 5 years I’ll have three different ways to log into three different government retirement websites.

Kind of funny.

I’m just curious, if anyone knows, if someone still maintains a US address will they be receiving this form to fill out and return?

Ken I don't think the SSA-7162-OCR-SM is sent to US addresses. I guess they don't think that people living in US would move and not let them know. HA HA

Yeah. I asked my dad and a few relatives and they didn’t know what the hell i was talking about. LOL. It will be a few years down the road before I need to figure out how it’s going to work for me, but I won’t change my address from the US to wherever I may be overseas unless I’m required to.

US Social Security had a huge amount of money in a trust fund. The politicians could not stand to see all that money and somehow managed to get their fingers into it. They gutted the fund. Not only that, but they used Social Security to fund many other social programs that are actually welfare programs. Before they fiddle with the programs, they need to use what money is left for what it was intended for. The fund was intended to provide for elderly citizens living expenses. Politicians are loath to try to cut retirement benefits. There is no doubt that there will be some changes but actual payments to retired people will be the last to be affected.

Lots of expats maintain a US address....taxes, driver's license, Social Security, credit cards, bank accounts, etc. Some people don't, some do. If you maintain a US address, you won't receive a 7162.

On the subject of SSA failing.....skeptics have been saying the fund will dry up for decades. It hasn't. Like climate change, politicians will probably wait til the last minute to keep the fund fully funded.....their votes count on it. For now, the fund is projected to be viable for at least another 10 years.

Does every American collecting SS and living overseas with an overseas address on record receive a 7162?

I believe so. To get a definitive answer, I would call/email ACS.

"If you maintain a US address, you won't receive a 7162." Not totally true. I have a US address but my SS statement etc all come to my mailing address here in Thailand. Best source of information regarding SS questions is the Federal Benefits Unit (FBU) Manila PI. Email your questions to them and they will reply in about a week.

So does your 7162 come from and returned to the FBU in Manila?

No my 7162 comes to me by mail from the US and must be returned by mail to the US. It's not a big problem for me. I returned them for both my wife and I by Registered mail. FBU Manila will not accept an emailed 7162.
