Buy a bicycle in Udon?

Post by Stanley Road » September 23, 2018, 5:31 pm

Hello fellas. Looking for suggestions on where to buy a bicycle in Udon. I hit the town today following google map locations but there seem to be loads of bike shops in town (but closed today, Sunday). Would be great if I could get a suggestion for a shop with reasonable choice.

Im looking for something around the 10K price range, maybe 15k. Its only for one hour a day around a lake path, dont need anything pricey - but something a little better than those 'Turbo' brand bikes you get in Tescos/Big C for 3500 baht.

Thanks for your help!

There's quite a few bike shops in Udon now. I normally use the shop near the Complex. Peter, the owner, speaks English.
I am sure he can set you up. Lots of bikes to choose from

There is also a bike shop inside Home Pro on the ring road or a couple second hand bike shops selling some decent looking stuff just past the airport (if heading into town from the airport). Also if you go to the brick house bar on Soi Sampan they are selling a nearly new fat bike. Its parked putside the front.

Good luck.

Last year I bought a very good used Japanese lightweight aluminium frame bike for 5000 baht from a shop next door to the SiriGrand Hotel on Benchang Road. They had a good selection of bikes.

I just came back from hunting around Udon. Most of the small shops in town were no good really, the bikes in there are fine but just not what im looking for its mostly realy cheap brands like 'Turbo' and the like. Tried Home pro and again they look fine, but not what im after. Tried a shop out towards the ring road in the general Home pro area (at the cross roads where the 4x4 accessory shop is with large digi-billboard) and that was a little better, around the 17k price range but the fella was a bit vague when I asked about the brand - part Italian, part Chinese, assembled in Thailand.

Couldn't find the shop close to the hotel that was suggested and drove around that area three times so maybe its closed down? On a side note, that hotel is comically awful lol! Does anyone actually stay there? I couldn't believe how ropey it looked ha ha.

Again just to stress these cheaper bikes around the 7-10k mark are totally fine for me, im not an avid biker its just a few loops around a lake I want to do, maybe 20km a day max, and take it on holiday with us when we go on road trips up North in the truck. All i need is a cheap Turbo style bike, but I dont realy want a cheap Turbo style bike if that makes sense. I was hoping to get something branded like Trek or Specialized but at the entry level for those types of brands. Maybe up to 20,000 Baht.

There must be a shop or two around that sells better bikes because I have seen so many Thais on real expensive bikes around that lake they look like they might be 100k up some of them.

Can you think of anything else chaps? Willing to drive down to Khon Kean if there are better options there?

Thanks again for the help

Peter is definitely not out of business. If you are at the stoplight by the Complex, facing the bus station, turn right. Go to the 5-way intersection. There's a PTT gas station, Kasikorn Bank & LEO distributor on the right. The bike shop in across the street on the corner. He has many makes, styles & prices

Lots of choice for bikes around town, what I find difficult to find are any frame sizes larger than M. Does anyone know of a place that sells larger frame sizes L or XL.

The shop I've mentioned has large frame bikes. Better bike frames are measured in inches from pedal to the seat base. I'm 6ft. tall, My bike is 22 inch. Many in stock. Peter rides bikes & is a nice guy. He'll help you get what you need

That's maybe Nick Bike Center on Wearsai Road. He does my pushbike rebuilds and refurbs and knows his stuff.

Can also try the sports shop in central plaza next to pizza hut and Sizzler. They do Trek, GT and few cheaper brands.

I brought a Trek from Bike Corner, this is a shop more for the serious chaps so I figured on having no hope when I walked in, given the first thing I noticed was a frame only for 90,000. They have an offer on with some budget-end Treks, 13500 Baht. I got a bit carried away on extras I realy dont need and spent 17,000. Pretty happy with it.

Thanks again for the suggestions and help.

Muni2 - I went back to that 5 way intersection today and honestly I just couldn't see it. Thanks for uploading the photo and directions I appreciate it but mate I am either blind as a bat or they have closed down? I found a little shop that had poodles running around and stunk to high hell of dog piss (not slagging the guy there but honest, the place wreaked) a few doors down from the hotel, mostly second hand bikes but it was a terrace shop and not a corner shop. All around that 5 way intersection in 3 directions I drove up and down. Looked opposite K Bank, the gas station, up and down there twice... Mate, its not there lol!

I believe there's only one 5 way intersection in Udon Thani aside from those in the traffic circles. This bike shop is NOT in any of the circles. There's a Kasikorn Bank just opposite the bike shop. A PTT gas station is located right next to the bank. This 5 way intersection is located on Prajak Rd which runs from the train station, past Central Plaza and all the way to Tung Sri Mung Park. The bike shop is exactly where Muni said it's located and is open 6 days a week. I've been a customer of Peter (owner) for more than 10 years now. I'm also very familiar with Bike Corner as well. Bike Corner is the local dealer for Pro Bike in Bkk.

drive past the complex stop light on Prajak Silapakorn. The bike shop is immediately on your left at the next stop light which is the five way intersection. Here it is: https://www.google.com/maps/@17.4052373 ... 312!8i6656
