RAF Dambusters mission recreated in Peak District

Enthusiasts have recreated the Dambusters mission at the Derwent Dam in the Peak District, north England.

The original Dambusters trained at the dam, before their mission into Germany to drop a bouncing bomb in 1943.

The Blades aerobatic team recreated the training runs using modern navigation equipment.

The original team simply used a compass and a ruler to calculate when to drop their bouncing bomb.

A bit more about The Blades team who recreated this . They are based at Sywell in Northampton where I used to fly from . They do a tremendous amount for charity and are also available for corporate hire. The link will give you their program for this year for any one lucky enough to be able to see them.

Hi,
I alway thought, and was always told, when in the R.A.F., they used two lights, fitted to the plane, and when the two beams met on the water, they were at the correct height to drop their bomb. Also the bomb aimer had a makeshift device, when the two towers of the dam were in the rings they were at the right distance, from the target, to drop their bomb. The devices were made using basic maths. And B. Wallace had a hand in making these.

Douglas is correct if the movie made in 1955 staring Richard Todd & Michael Redgrave is factual. Must have seen it 10 times over the years.

Yes, I understand the same as Douglas and Bandung regarding how they determined the correct height at which to drop the bomb.

Maybe the writer in the article was referring to how they navigated to get to that location, either that or he didn't to his homework well. ;)

Some more info and videos from the film.

Richard Todd, who just recently passed away, was a captain in the British Airborne and took part in the capture and defense of the Pegasus bridge on D Day. He played the part of the airborne commander of that mission in The Longest Day.

Richard Todd, Michael Redgrave? A ruddy classic, Cali. I spent two weeks on a course at RAF Scampton back in the 80s.

the barnes wallis science angle added interest to
story. in particular , the idea of two searchlights
from plane, intersecting on water. so d= 150ft

I spent a week at ATC camp in RAF Scampton (and also RAF Coningsby) back in the early 60's. One was during the Cuba crisis and they had Vulcan bombers taking off and landing at intervals throughout the day and night, - with the appropriate vibrations through the buildings.

A proper bomber! I think Scampton has closed or is about to.
