Scammed by Laos Immigration ???????

Post by 747man » May 29, 2015, 3:37 pm

I Left the house at 1100hrs to go across The Friendship Bridge @ Nong Khai,I Had crossed onto the Laos side by 1130hrs,Thats when "The Fun " Started...Went to Laos Immigration with my Passport,Form filled in & 35 US$ For Laos Visa,The Immigration Officer gave me back ALL & Said You cannot get Laos Visa ( Money Too Old ??) he pointed out that a US$20 Had a slight " Nick " in the top of the note,I Then asked him what to do,He said change into Laos Kip Which I Did & Recieved only 280,000 Kip ( The Visa is 360,000 Kip ) So I had to give another 300 THB With the 280,000 Kip to make up the shortfall  ,This meant the Visa now cost me US$45,So I reckon some sort of SCAM is in operation at Laos Immigration,O.K So its only 10 US$ Extra but if they do it say 100 Times a Day it's A Nice Little Earner......

Report it to the U.S. Embassy. only joking. Even in Thailand they won't accept bills that are torn even just a little. You were lucky they exchanged it for you.

55555 -- 35 Deg C but felt like 100 deg C - Boiling as that was what he was probably doing after paying the premium.

Dunno why you didn't just pay the 1300 Baht fee = USD $39.00

Nong Khai was very pleasant around 11:30 this morning but it didn't last long as the storm clouds rolled in from the Lao side..!

Although Jack Spratt has had one of his best one liners on this thread =D>, everyone must realize the seriousness of a ten dollar scam especially if that was your entire spending money for the trip to buy fake Lacoste Polo shirts.
And another thing, a ten dollar scam ( not really a scam at all in OT's honest opinion) is more interesting than the weather in Laos and surrounding areas.
Thanks for the heads up 747youngman.

This is an excellent question that deserves a serious answer, which cannot be supplied by the Nong Khai weather person.

Usually, I found that Viang Chan, Luang Prabang, Savannakhet and Pakse could reach uncomfortably hot temperatures through the day. However, places on the Bolaven Plateau, Luang Namtha, Muang Sing and Xieng Khouang (the area by the Plain of Jars could be quite comfortable during the day and some may even want to sport a jacket. Phongsaly, which I will be visiting in early July can be very cool also suffers from a lack of electricity for much of the day and night.

Scottish Pounds - good idea Wazza. OT's got a few Spanish pesetas worth about £80 in 1984. I'll give them to Laos Immigration next time I cross the bridge. All in notes without any torn bits so should be OK.

I'm not arich bloke, don't get me wrong, I've got a few quid, but I wouldn't worry about £6. However. It would piss me off a bit but I expect this sort of situation in Asia so I wouldn't stress too much brother
