Falang PhD quizzing Thai teachers

Post by Baht Man » July 4, 2016, 11:43 am

The Ms. is in BKK for a week of study on how to better teach their kids back in their schools.

She's a Thai language teacher with a "Masters" degree, not mathematics, science or history.

Today she sent me a pic of a quiz given them by the teacher with a PhD and they had two minutes to complete the three sections.

1. Correct this formula using 1 stroke. 5 + 5 + 5 = 550.
She reads a bit of English, but I doubt any of them there understood what was to be done.

2. Complete this sequence in a logical manner M T W T X X X
A bit easy but again, how many understood the directions? Sequence? Logical manner?

3. Write anything below..... with a blank space below the statement.

I'll give you a bit of time to figure them out, but remember they only had two minutes.

I cant understand the logic of this guy ( or his bosses) posing this to the group, which were ALL Thai language teachers.

Any thoughts?

I am neither Thai Nor a Thai language teacher...
Would you accept this as a solution 5 + 5 + 5 =/ 545 ( not equal ) ?

All correct if you did them in less than 2 minutes.

Problem is no one understood the directions.
Ms. wrote anything as directed and got a D, some wrote happy or some other "anything" but needless to say no one passed.

Great answer if your putting the slash thru the equals sign, but doubt this guy would have accepted it, even done correctly.

Never thought of this one. =D> =D>

Now go ask any Thai and see them scratch their head. #-o

I got them quite quick Baht Man but can see this as being of no use to the Thai people who were asked the questions.

Depends on the context of how and when it was given. I would use this just an ice breaker or something to get the audience attention and brain working since these are just brain teaser questions, unrelated to the subject.

So what was the acceptable answer to "write anything"?
UFF DA!

There is a second, more obvious answer to the problem. One simply draws a diagonal line through the "Equals" symbol to convert it to a symbol which means "is not equal to".

Symbol Symbol Name Meaning / definition
= equals sign equality
≠ not equal sign inequality
> strict inequality greater than
< strict inequality less than

My answer is probably one a mathematician would give. The other is just a trick, and a silly one at that.

I would guess just about anything, as most wrote something there and got credit. But in the end, nobody passed.
