FOR A BETTER SLEEP

Turn down the temperature
The ideal sleeping environment is a little bit cooler than you might normally like, and turning down the thermostat just a few degrees is a good way to make your bedroom more comfortable and conducive to sleep. If you really don't want to turn the A/C down, buy a fan that will both circulate air around the room and provides some white noise.

Consider blackout curtains
A dark room is also important for good sleep, and if you're frequently being woken up by lights in or outside of your home, blackout curtains can make a world of difference. They're inexpensive and come in tons of colors so you don't have to worry that they won't match your decor. Or use Tin Foil on windows or plastic

Use earplugs to block out annoying sounds
It might take a little getting used to, but light sleepers can benefit tremendously from sleeping with earplugs that can block out the noise of a snoring partner or a raging party at the house next door. Try a few different types to figure out which ones fit your ears best, and keep a pair on your nightstand for a silent night's sleep.

or invest in a white noise machine
If earplugs don't work for you, a white noise machine is both relaxing and can also help muffle any annoying ambient noise. Whether you choose classic white noise, relaxing spa sounds, or the calming sounds of a summer rainstorm, adding a little sound may help you sleep better.

Consider replacing your mattress
If all else fails, the thing that standing in between you and a good night's sleep might be your mattress. Over time, mattresses can shift and sag, creating pressure points on the body that make for restless sleep and muscle tension. If it's been more than about eight years, it's probably time to consider replacing your mattress.

THE KOH-I-NOOR — UNKNOWN
Topping our list of the most expensive diamonds in the world is the legendary Koh-I-Noor. Weighing in at a massive 105.6ct, the most expensive diamond in the world is oval shaped. Steeped in mystery and legend, the stone is believed to have been mined in India in the 1300s.

The controversy behind the stone lies in claims that Britain stole the stone from India and that it rightfully belongs to India. Rightly or wrongly, Britain acquired the stone in 1850 and in 1852, Prince Albert had it cut from 186ct to 105.6ct to increase its brilliance and sparkle. The colorless oval-cut diamond is also known as Mountain of Light and the Diamond of Babur.

1812
June 18
War of 1812 begins
June 18, 1812: The day after the Senate followed the House of Representatives in voting to declare war against Great Britain, President James Madison signs the declaration into law—and the War of 1812 begins. The American war declaration, opposed by a sizable minority in Congress, had been called in response to the British economic blockade of France, the induction of American seaman into the British Royal Navy against their will, and the British support of Indian tribes along the Great Lakes frontier. A faction of Congress known as the “War Hawks” had been advocating war with Britain for several years and had not hidden their hopes that a U.S. invasion of Canada might result in significant territorial land gains for the United States.
In the months after President Madison proclaimed the state of war to be in effect, American forces launched a three-point invasion of Canada, all of which were decisively unsuccessful. In 1814, with Napoleon Bonaparte’s French Empire collapsing, the British were able to allocate more military resources to the American war, and Washington, D.C., fell to the British in August. In Washington, British troops burned the White House, the Capitol, and other buildings in retaliation for the earlier burning of government buildings in Canada by U.S. soldiers.
In September, the tide of the war turned when Thomas Macdonough’s American naval force won a decisive victory at the Battle of Plattsburg Bay on Lake Champlain. The invading British army was forced to retreat back into Canada. The American victory on Lake Champlain led to the conclusion of U.S.-British peace negotiations in Belgium, and on December 24, 1814, the Treaty of Ghent was signed, formally ending the War of 1812. By the terms of the agreement, all conquered territory was to be returned, and a commission would be established to settle the boundary of the United States and Canada.

British forces assailing the Gulf Coast were not informed of the treaty in time, and on January 8, 1815, the U.S. forces under Andrew Jackson achieved the greatest American victory of the war at the Battle of New Orleans. The American public heard of Jackson’s victory and the Treaty of Ghent at approximately the same time, fostering a greater sentiment of self-confidence and shared identity throughout the young republic.

Rolex SA (/ˈroʊlɛks/) is a British-founded Swiss watch designer and manufacturer based in Geneva, Switzerland.[2] Founded in 1905 as Wilsdorf and Davis by Hans Wilsdorf and Alfred Davis in London, England, the company registered the word 'Rolex' as the brand name of its watches in 1908, and it became Rolex Watch Co. Ltd. in 1915.[3][4][5][6] After World War I, the company moved its base of operations to Geneva because of the unfavorable economy in the United Kingdom. In 1920, Hans Wilsdorf registered Montres Rolex SA in Geneva as the new company name (montre is French for a watch (timepiece)); it later became Rolex SA.[2][4][7][8] Since 1960, the company has been owned by the Hans Wilsdorf Foundation, a private family trust.[5][9][10]

Rolex SA and its subsidiary Montres TUDOR SA design, make, distribute, and service wristwatches sold under the Rolex and Tudor brands.

Rolex did not produce their watches in-house since its foundation until the early 21st century where they bought over the components' manufacturers which made the watches for Rolex, notably Jean Aegler. Rolex's past business model consists of purchasing all the watch components from third-party manufacturers and finishing the final assembly in the Rolex headquarters.

Shawarma (/ʃəˈwɑːrmə/; Arabic: شاورما) is a popular Levantine[4] dish consisting of meat cut into thin slices, stacked in a cone-like shape, and roasted on a slowly-turning vertical rotisserie or spit. Originally made with lamb or mutton, it is now also made of chicken, turkey, beef, or veal.[5][6][1] Thin slices are shaved off the cooked surface as it continuously rotates.[7][8] Shawarma is one of the world's most popular street foods, especially in Egypt, the countries of the Levant, the Caucasus, the Arabian Peninsula and the rest of the Middle East.

Chess is a board game played between two players. It is sometimes called Western chess or international chess to distinguish it from related games such as xiangqi and shogi. The current form of the game emerged in Southern Europe during the second half of the 15th century after evolving from chaturanga, a similar but much older game of Indian origin. Today, chess is one of the world's most popular games, played by millions of people worldwide.

Chess is an abstract strategy game and involves no hidden information. It is played on a square chessboard with 64 squares arranged in an eight-by-eight grid. At the start, each player (one controlling the white pieces, the other controlling the black pieces) controls sixteen pieces: one individual, one queen, two rooks, two bishops, two knights, and eight pawns. The object of the game is to checkmate the opponent's individual, whereby an individual is under immediate attack (in "check") and there is no way for it to escape. There are also several ways a game can end in a draw.

Organized chess arose in the 19th century. Chess competition today is governed internationally by FIDE (International Chess Federation). The first universally recognized World Chess Champion, Wilhelm Steinitz, claimed his title in 1886; Magnus Carlsen is the current World Champion. A huge body of chess theory has developed since the game's inception. Aspects of art are found in chess composition, and chess in its turn influenced Western culture and art and has connections with other fields such as mathematics, computer science, and psychology.

One of the goals of early computer scientists was to create a chess-playing machine. In 1997, Deep Blue became the first computer to beat the reigning World Champion in a match when it defeated Garry Kasparov. Today's chess engines are significantly stronger than the best human players, and have deeply influenced the development of chess theory.

garrulous

adjective | GAIR-uh-lus

What It Means

Garrulous can mean "chatty" or "excessively talkative" when describing a person (or even a bird that calls or sings rapidly and constantly), or it can mean "wordy" when referring to a piece of language itself, such as a letter or speech.

// Annie’s garrulous and outgoing nature is a stark contrast to her brother’s more retiring demeanor.

// His garrulous, rapid-fire presentation hyping the new feature was exciting at first, but soon became repetitive and tiresome.

Tin foil, also spelled tinfoil, is a thin foil made of tin. Tin foil was superseded after World War II by cheaper and more durable[1] aluminium foil, which is still referred to as "tin foil" in many regions (an example of a misnomer).istory

History[edit]
Foil made from a thin leaf of tin was commercially available before its aluminium counterpart.[2] In the late 19th century and early 20th century, tin foil was in common use, and some people continue to refer to the new product by the name of the old one. Tin foil is stiffer than aluminium foil.[3] It tends to give a slight tin taste to food wrapped in it, which is a major reason it has largely been replaced by aluminium and other materials for wrapping food.

Because of its corrosion resistance, oxidation resistance, availability, low cost, low toxicity, and slight malleability, tin foil was used as a filling for tooth cavities prior to the 20th century
The first audio recordings on phonograph cylinders were made on tin foil.

quibble Audio pronunciation

verb | KWIB-ul

What It Means

To quibble is to argue or complain about small, unimportant things. The word can also mean "to evade the point of an argument by making trivial or frivolous objections."

// If I may quibble for a moment with your description of the uniforms: they are navy blue, not royal blue.

// The siblings often quibbled over whose turn it was to sit in the front seat of the car.

Did you know most of the world's French fries come from New Brunswick?
New Brunswick-based McCain Foods makes one-third of all the frozen French fries produced in the world, and many come from a $65-million state-of-the art potato processing plant that's in Florenceville-Bristol. The small town in western New Brunswick has taken on the moniker "The French Fry Capital of the World." Not surprisingly, this is the location of the Potato World museum, and the heart of the mid-July National French Fry Day celebrations.

Did you know Saskatchewan produces most of the world's lentils?
No matter where you are, order some lentil soup and odds are you're getting a little taste of home. Canada is the largest exporter of green lentils in the world—about 1.5 million metric tonnes annually, with 90 per cent of it coming from Saskatchewan.

Did you know Winnipeg mints coins for over 60 countries?
The Royal Winnipeg Mint produces coins for 80 different countries, including centavos for Cuba, kroner for Norway, and pesos for Colombia. Currently, the Mint can produce over 20 million coins a day.

Did you know British Columbia makes tons of submarines?
Atlantis Submarines of British Columbia actually owns more submarines than many countries—but these ones are used for tourism. The Canadian company initiated the world's first commercial tourist submarine in the Cayman Islands in 1986. More than 10 million people have since experienced underwater adventures in their 48 and 64 passenger submarines in the Caribbean and Pacific. The subs they operate in Barbados, the Cayman Islands, Aruba, St. Martin, Cozumel, Curacao and Guam were all made in Canada.

Health care is publicly funded, but not everything is “free”
After moving to Canada as a permanent resident with health care benefits, you’ll be able to see a doctor at no cost—but if you leave the appointment with a prescription, you could be left picking up the tab at the pharmacy. Likewise, dental care—which generally isn’t publicly funded—can seriously put a dent in your savings. Third-party health insurance (often provided through your employer) can help offset the often exorbitant prices Canadians pay for dental and eye care, as well as medicines.

Oh, and if you think you need antibiotics for what ails you, you’ll need to see a doctor first. Unlike in India, antibiotics aren’t available over-the-counter.

Tip: Even if you’re moving to Canada as a permanent resident, it could take several months for your health care benefits to kick in. It’s a good idea to arrive with at least six months of international health insurance as a buffer.

You’ll pay through the nose for your phone
Sad but true, Canadians pay some of the highest wireless prices in the world. Unlike other parts of the world, where pay-as-you-go or prepaid plans are commonplace, most mobile phone plans in Canada are purchased on a contract basis. This, combined with hefty telecommunication taxes, conspire to make “staying connected” a major line-item on your monthly expenses. To avoid using more data than your plan allows, make it a habit to connect to public WiFi as often as possible. You’re welcome.

Frank William Abagnale Jr. (/ˈæbəɡneɪl/; born April 27, 1948) is an American author and convicted felon. Abagnale targeted individuals and small businesses[1][2][3] but gained notoriety in the late 1970s by claiming a diverse range of victimless workplace frauds,[4] many of which are now in doubt.[5][6][7] In 1980, Abagnale co-wrote his autobiography, Catch Me If You Can, which built a narrative around these claimed victimless frauds. The book later inspired the film of the same name directed by Steven Spielberg in 2002, in which Abagnale was portrayed by actor Leonardo DiCaprio. He has also written four other books. Abagnale runs Abagnale and Associates, a consultancy firm.[8]

Among others, Abagnale claims to have worked as an assistant state attorney general in the U.S. state of Louisiana, a hospital physician in Georgia, and a Pan American World Airways pilot who logged over two million air miles.[4] The veracity of most of Abagnale's claims has been questioned and in many cases outright refuted.[9][10][11] In 2002, Abagnale admitted on his website that some facts had been over-dramatized or exaggerated, though he was not specific about what was exaggerated or omitted about his life.[12] In 2020, journalist Alan C. Logan provided documentary evidence that the majority of Abagnale's claims had been at best wildly exaggerated and at worst completely invented.

The Rubik's Cube is a 3-D combination puzzle originally invented in 1974[2][3] by Hungarian sculptor and professor of architecture Ernő Rubik. Originally called the Magic Cube,[4] the puzzle was licensed by Rubik to be sold by Ideal Toy Corp in 1980[5] via businessman Tibor Laczi and Seven Towns founder Tom Kremer.[6] The cube was released internationally in 1980 and became one of the most recognized icons in popular culture. It won the 1980 German Game of the Year special award for Best Puzzle. As of January 2009, 350 million cubes had been sold worldwide,[7][8][needs update] making it the world's bestselling puzzle game[9][10] and bestselling toy.[11]

On the original classic Rubik's Cube, each of the six faces was covered by nine stickers, each of one of six solid colours: white, red, blue, orange, green, and yellow. Some later versions of the cube have been updated to use coloured plastic panels instead, which prevents peeling and fading.[12] In models as of 1988, white is opposite yellow, blue is opposite green, and orange is opposite red, and the red, white, and blue are arranged in that order in a clockwise arrangement.[13] On early cubes, the position of the colours varied from cube to cube.[14] An internal pivot mechanism enables each face to turn independently, thus mixing up the colours. For the puzzle to be solved, each face must be returned to have only one colour. Similar puzzles have now been produced with various numbers of sides, dimensions, and stickers, not all of them by Rubik.

Although the Rubik's Cube reached its height of mainstream popularity in the 1980s, it is still widely known and used. Many speedcubers continue to practice it and similar puzzles; they also compete for the fastest times in various categories. Since 2003, the World Cube Association, the international governing body of the Rubik's Cube, has organised competitions worldwide and recognises world records.

Not to be confused with Ball (cricket), which is the event of the ball being bowled to the batsman.
A cricket ball is a hard, solid ball used to play cricket. A cricket ball consists of a cork core wound with string then a leather cover stitched on, and manufacture is regulated by cricket law at first-class level. The trajectory of a cricket ball when bowled, through movement in the air, and off the ground, is influenced by the action of the bowler and the condition of the ball and the pitch, while working on the cricket ball to obtain optimal condition is a key role of the fielding side. The principal method through which the batsman scores runs is by hitting the ball, with the bat, into a position where it would be safe to take a run, or by directing the ball through or over the boundary. Cricket balls are harder and heavier than baseballs.[1]

In Test cricket, professional domestic games that spread over a multitude of days, and almost the entirety of amateur cricket, the traditional red cricket ball is normally used. In many one day cricket matches, a white ball is used instead in order to remain visible under floodlights, and since 2010, pink has been introduced to contrast with players' white clothing and for improved night visibility during day/night Test matches.[2] Training balls of white, red and pink are also common, and tennis balls and other similar-sized balls can be used for training or informal cricket matches. During cricket matches, the quality of the ball changes to a point where it is no longer usable, and during this decline its properties alter and thus can influence the match. Altering the state of the cricket ball outside the permitted manners designated in the rules of cricket is prohibited during a match, and so-called "ball tampering" has resulted in numerous controversies.

Injuries and fatalities have been caused by cricket balls during matches.[3] The hazards posed by cricket balls were a key motivator for the introduction of protective equipment.
