Burns Night - 25 January 2021

Post by tamada » January 24, 2021, 2:11 pm

Tomorrow sees the world's annual celebration of Scotland's national poet, Robert Burns. Glasgow Uni have an interactive world map of Burns Night festivities here :-

Be therr or be squerr
Due to Covid, there's close to bugger all this year with the British Embassy in Laos in 2019 and The Saint Andrews Society in Bangkok 2020 being the last local events. So, you can try DIY at hame.

I have my stuff sorted. Usually served with neeps and tatties (and gai-yang with chili dip for the local, efnik touch).

Address To The Deep Fried Mars Bar

I ken weel ye're bonnie tastie,
Great leader o' the choc bar racy
I'd ne'er let a drap gang tae wasty,
I love to shove 'em
Doon the hole in ma fair facey
O gi' us many o' them.

The chippy shop groans w' piles o' bars,
All o' them are called bonnie Mars,
Anither choc would be a ****** farce!
'Tis true Scots food,
Ay, loved alike by Ma's and Da's,
They taste so guid.

I love tae take off that sonsie paper
Did ye e'er see so guid a chocolate wrapper?
An' then I coat it wi' some bonnie batter,
Into the fat it goes;
Waste not, we'll use them in oor crapper,
Reekin' tae the nose!

Ye must'nae o'er cook yon clackit choc:
Insides must ne'er melt, ye leekie-cock,
'Twould gie the connoisseur a shock.
Ye need true balance
Twixt melt and hard as ice-cold rock:
So tak' nae chance.

O Heavens wha' mak' Scotland so happy,
An' rejected Sassenach food so crappy,
But blessed us a' w' neighbourhood chippie
And sawdusted bars;
So, dinnae hang aboot, mak' it snappy!
Fry up a braw Mars!

Where did you get the McSweens haggis. Famous for only the youngest, most succulent haggi being used after making sure all the shotgun pellets have been removed. Gods gift to the culinary world.

^ Personal import from my U.K. visit last year and the last one in captivity. If I had been a wee bit smarter, I would have brought a few more.

Never mind, Dean has the recipe now.

While on the subject of the Scunthorpe Pipe band as kindly posted by Tam its only fair to include an image of the SDWI .. Scunthorpe District Womens institute seen here before the start of a local fund raising event which was very well attended mainly by men .. Dorothy (far left image) who ran the cake stall commented what a fantastic turn out all the cakes sold in an hour and i got bar fined by the local vicar

Image

Just goes to show the famous plaid skirt is not only popular with rough tough Scottish High n Low landers but offers a nice airy option across the gender spectrum .

Having tried it twice just to make sure its as horrid as i thought and being under the influence the second time i can concur Haggis should carry a health warning !!!

Just had a schlep about Big C. Plenty of farang but no blue & white face paint.
At the time of our Lord 1314 they were starving & outnumbered.
Or maybe it was a bit later at 1330, I forget, anyway they closed a bank of tills so the queues outnumbered the staff again

The sound of celebratory bagpipes is coming over the landscape loud & clear.

Didn't need the instant haggis but as usual the Macsweens vintage one was a total wipe out. Not even any left over for sandwiches. That was my last one so this pandemic better sort itself out afore next year.

Reading how Brexit buggered up a whole lot of European Burns Nights as it became virtually unexportable. Macsweens said they advised customers to get their orders in early and were busting a gut shipping as many as they could before they left the EU. Those that dragged their feet lost out and had to make do with whatever canned versions they could find, substitute it with whatever else was available or cancel the event.

"Reading how Brexit buggered up a whole lot of European Burns Nights as it became virtually unexportable."

Slightly off topic but is the UK imposing the same rules as the EU. We only seem to get the Pro. EU MSM take on import restrictions ie shellfish, a drivers ham sandwiches and now haggis. Are we doing the same with French Lamb, German sausages, Italian hams and cooked meats etc. Not that important just now with the lockdowns but when things start getting back to the new normal??

Good point. I read late last year how something upwards of 60% of what Brits buy off their high street supermarket shelves is imported from Europe. Don't quote me on that percentage but it was definitely the majority of stuff. So far, we haven't heard any flavor of MSM talking of empty shelves or flustered UK shoppers suddenly being unable to get their Sardinian pomegranates, French aubergines or Polish kielbasa.

Remainer myths being quietly shattered daily.
