For the DIY car servicing guys...

Post by tamada » February 17, 2021, 9:51 am

Where do you dispose of your old motor oil?

A quick squiz on lazada and some entrepreneurial sorts are bundling what's needed for different service intervals into packages that beat the dealerships easily and probably save a few bob over the local service garage too. For example, for the 120k Ranger service, 8 liters of oil, all 3 filters plus the new washer for the drain plug for less than 3000 baht.

So if I got all motivated, where would I dispose of the old black stuff?

Sell it to your neighbor, it'll probably be the 1st oil change his 20 yo pickup has ever had!

Or give it to the 5Star chicken lady opposite Boonthavorn. No oil can be dirtier than the stuff she's using

Me too 😳
I think the best one by a country mile is the one in the PTT just after the tunnel on the Nong Khai road. I think she has a lot of footfall so it’s always fresh & clean oil.

Anyway, back to disposing of engine oil, if not wanting to cook chicken it could be left in a can by the bins. I’m sure the bin men will be able to recycle it & get a few baht

The cost of basic servicing here is SO CHEAP that I use Mitsubishi for mine, never more than Thb 2000 for Oil change including filter. Just had All oils changed engine and autogearbox, plus fuel filter had change from Thb 4000, ZERO HASSLE getting rid of oil.
Cannot for the life of me understand the problem as to why you wish to DIY .

Who says it's a problem KP?

I dunno, some people have a mechanical bent and others don't know the business end of a screwdriver from their enlarged prostate. Did you ever have a Meccano set as a kid or were you always a humorless copper?

Either way, I am bored sh*tless and like doing stuff that keeps me active so saving a few bob is a bonus.

Hey, I used to do all my servicing on all my cars, including changing clutch plates, rebuilding engines etc, plus anything to do with rep[lacing bushes on the steering I could happily and easily do , however these days with the electronics and computerisation of cars/trucks, simple activities can be daunting. Also I find that whereas before it was a simple task , these days many cars are so designed that if you do not have a hoist attempting to work on them is more difficult.

So it is not the case that I am unable to do it, why the hell bother when servicing is so reasonable here, now in the UK 18 years ago a simple service on my CRV was over Gbp 100:00 , these days over 250 pounds, so I would try it at home, but here , why ?????
