How to do a trade deal with the UK

Post by rick » June 26, 2021, 9:44 pm

Australia did a trade deal with the UK. How did the trade negotiations go? Now we all know you ask for more than you expect and negotiate to a compromise. So how was this settled so quickly?

Liz Truss - "So what do you want?"
Australians - "Tariff free access for all our meat, even hormone treated"
Liz Truss - "OK"
Australians - " Tariff free access for wheat and fruit?"
Liz Truss - "OK"
Australians - quick huddle and then - "Tariff free access for all other agricultural products, and coal"
Liz Truss - "OK"
Australians - " I'm sorry, but we cannot give you Tariff free access on all the items requested at section 2 and section 3, subsections i, ii and iii, because the trades unions wouldn't accept that"
Liz Truss - " Oh dear"
Australians - "OK we will drop the tariff on Hob-Nobs?"
Liz Truss - "It's a deal!"

Apparently The New Zealand government is now revising their negotiating position......

Bullsh*t rick

There was NEVER any Hob Nobs tariff for them to "drop"

Rumour has it, she did arrange at least ONE draw in the Ashes series though

The details may be nonsense, But Liz cut out her Civil service advisers and just said yes to everything they asked for. Her advisers were pretty stunned, hence the leak. The reality is the content of the deal was irrelevant, just a tick box exercise for Brexit - we can do our own trade deals - nothing said about then being good for the UK. The Japanese deal - same as the EU deal with Japan, except we can export about 100 kilo's of Blue cheese a year.

Another classic " get a life , living here will not effect us anyway ."

Unless of course you have a UK based income/pension/pay taxes/own a property or have any other finances linked to the UK economy ..... but there again I'm sure none of the Brits here would fall into that category =;

There is at least one member of this forum who not only has been involved at multiple levels with UK trade deals (apart from final negotiations) but also has many years of knowledge, experience and research of exporting outside of Europe and negotiating UK export contracts directly with overseas businesses and government agencies.

This involvement included meetings and discussions with those who could provide direct input to the process such as:
• UK Members of Parliament.
• UK Government Ministries.

It also included active participation in:
• UK Trade Associations.
• Specialist groups that covered and researched the very real difficulties of exporting (e.g. the minefields of export financing and the multiplicity of differing commercial rules and regulations).

However, all this was back at a time when UK Governments would listen to and act on the advice of experts (i.e. those with actual knowledge and experience).

It was also at a time when UK Governments had a pretty firm grasp of the basics of Trade Deals:

1. Trade deals helping UK economy & businesses = GOOD

2. Trade deals screwing UK economy & businesses = BAD

I see Nissan has just announced a 1bn GBP investment at their Sunderland car plant which will create more than 6000 direct & indirect jobs.
I guess it’s not really a trade deal but I couldn’t be bothered starting a new thread & its goods news nonetheless

^ Just heard this on the steam radio. Isn't Sunderland the linchpin of the Labor red wall and whose 61% leave Brexit vote created the £'s huge crash? Although there's no mention of any Tory sweeteners, this looks like a nice reward, no?

An interesting view on the Nissan “Investment” from Phil Moorhouse.
Notes:
  • Video title:
Taxpayer Bribes Used to Simulate Brexit Jobs
  • Video description:
As a result of brexit, the UK car manufacturing sector has collapsed. But news of a new Nissan car battery plant has brexit supporters thinking it somehow backs up their claims, despite it still representing a huge net loss of jobs for the sector and the town of Sunderland. But it's even worse than that as Boris Johnson has used taxpayer money to bribe Nissan to set the plant up.
Phil Moorhouse bio:
  • Phil Moorhouse is a science teacher, socialist, Pro-EU, Yorkshireman, political commentator on YouTube and a former resident of Scunthorpe.
