Poor air quality in Udon Thani

Post by Zidane » January 25, 2020, 1:15 pm

Apparently there are currently a lot of respiratory tract illnesses in Udon Thani, including me. :(
I have to admit I,ve never paid much attention to air quality posts but the doctor told me yesterday that Udon currently has an air quality of pm2.5 which is very unhealthy as it means there are a lot of small particles floating about that can get into the nose, throat and lungs.
Areas where there is building work or where areas are being cleared are even worse.
A pm10 is much healthier as it means the particles are a lot larger and more difficult to get into the human system.
I never knew that. Most at risk are the elderly and the unfit.

For about a week now, the Udon air quality has been AWFUL, Dangerous for anyone.. Particularly yesterday.
And nothing is being done about it, they don t even dare to tell the truth about the situation. Not a rosy picture.
Have a look...

I fly in and out of Udon many times a year and have to say landing in Udon yesterday afternoon was the worst visibility I have seen in years.
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left

Dont know why but for some reason yesterday I saw seven or eight people burning stuff on the pavement or in the road during my 20 min drive into town (unusual to see more than one so something must have been going on ...... refuse collection failure??))......... that certainly was not helping the air quality [-X [-X [-X

It's Chinese/Vietnamese New Year. Families burn paper products (money, cars, clothes, mobile phones, etc) for their ancestors. Probably lighting lots of fireworks as well.

I have stated this small fat before, Udon Thani centre is in a depression that is to say from all points of the compass you go downhill into Udon Thani coupled with the fact that the last few days there has been almost no wind of any description worth talking about the hot sticky polluted air stays where it is added to daily by traffic fumes, burning biuts and lieces and the myriad of open air markets spewing out their fumes from their offerings.
Today however thanks to the Rain most of the rubbish has been washed out of the AIR and there is gentle breeze, plus the ground NOT covered by concrete is cooler

Chuc Mung Nam Moi,
I was present for the burning at the beginning of Tet in my approx 8 years in Vietnam, mainly the burning of paper money for the direct family.
Is an invitation in Vietnamese culture during Tet to invite the dead back for the feast.
The Tet offensive one of the biggest, if not the biggest, turning points in “The American War” for the eventual wars end.

But over here it’s probably just the Thais burning rubbish.

With the exception of some rural areas many provinces of Thailand have been suffering extreme bad air quality .. Bkk 400 plus schools closed , Chang Mai also and recently Khon Kaen very bad .. firstly blamed on farmers buring crops which is illegal but the law ignored then our Chinese brothers burning stuff for CNY n their ancestors ..in reality its exessive pollution.

A galnce over from my office owards the airport and its really hazey almost like smoke with out a fire .

That's not good, how can I go running in a polluted atmosphere?

Yeah I started last Sunday....horrible chesty cough,banging headache,aching joints and a fever.
I struggled down to the pharmacy on Monday but the medication they gave me didnt really work and I still felt like s h i t yesterday.
So I went to see the ENT specialist on Phosri road last night. He sorted me out with something similar before. He,s a nice guy and speaks good english.
I think he also works at the AEK hospital but if you go to see him at his private practice he,s not that expensive and knows his stuff.

Earnest, you be careful running here,at the moment. The air quality is very poor. The nearest place I can think of where the air might be better is Phu Ruea.
A bit far for a 5km training run unless you spent a few days there.
Just when I thought our chance had passed, you go and save the best for last.

What are you doing here, KP? You have unfinished work on the other channel. Those boys are getting too comfortable over there.

I refuse to answer that question , as it is NONE of your damn business and those that supposedly pay for that channel can keep it , whether it is legal or not.
Why are you here would be more to the point attempting to cause problems while sitting in the UK talking garbage as usual.

Back on to the subject matter, very cool last night, but this morning waking up to a very still day a slight dampness in the Air , need some wind to move the air around.

judging from the bits and pieces of burnt ash that are laying on my front porch I'd say the pollution here in Udon is most likely the product of unrelenting sugar cane field burn offs for harvesting the cane... Big sugar means big money means rarely if ever is anybody going to be stopped from doing it..

Big money for who?? certainly not the farmer. prices are so low that the only people making money are the middle men as per usual here.

Regardless of the money and who makes it .. im guessing its not the farmer btw.. crop burning whatever the crop is illegal and has been for quite a while yet this law id openly flouted .. most buring is done after dark obviously not to disguise the fact its being done as its easier to spot at night more likely it hides the clouds of dense black smoke n ash as covers the area making a real mess if youve got your washing out , cleaned your car or windows ...its also a nightmare to sweep up.

Cant see the BIB chasing any culprits as nowt in it for them as its the poor farmers doing it not the buyers sellers n dealers.

I dont think the current bad quality air in udon is to do solely with cane burning its just an added extra to the general all year round pollution...IMO
