A nice restaurant, the type where you go out on a raft on a lake, or similar. Nice surroundings etc. Preferably within an hour or so drive from Udon.
Thanks for any suggestions.

Lake Phen is near Sang Khom, about 20 kilometres from Phen. It's called Nam Pan Lake (Google it). Basically, you buy some food and drink from one of the many stalls at Nam Pan and your hired raft is towed out to the middle of the lake. You can of course bring your own food and drink. It's a good afternoon out, weather permitting, and inexpensive too. Last time I was there the raft hire was 150 baht per hour. Each raft comes with three life jackets, you can hire more. Food and drink Thai prices. Can get very busy weekends and Thai holidays.

Phan Lake, or Lake Phan , can be packed out with many people and cars, especially on Buddha day...
not good in the wet, as mud everywhere....food stalls at lakeside.
easy to miss the road in, but after you pass thru Sang Khom, (Udon Province, not Sang Khom, Mekong River,) is a concrete making business on right. The road in is right there at a small cross roads by the Concrete metal business..
we, the family went one weekend but all the boats were booked out, so if you can book ahead, do so..

Thanks Martyn for the photo, will definitely make the trip, We visited Huai Krathing outside Loei and enjoyed a similar activity. With this lake being closer to Udon we will be able to enjoy the experience more often.

Phan Lake the last 1 km ? , is a gravel dirt road, take it easy for pot holes and crazy drivers returning home.
Enjoyed my visit there 6 months ago.
Loved the Walls Ice Cream boat that comes along side for sales
