Basically your description of ' neo liberalism' is correct, but it has tended over the last millenia to mean slightly different interpretations in different parts of the world. In US, during the tenure of Clinton and Gore, it was the Dems who conceived modern American Liberalism. So the term has 'morphed ' in its exact meaning. When I used the phrase, perhaps incorrectly , I was refering to the current worldwide push for so called progressive ideas, such as Soros's 'open society ,which is a front for more control. Like all good ideas, they tend to get hijacked and their actual meanings distorted.

Of course the US has a domestic market capable of using only it's own goods. The US invented consumerism. Once upon a time though it was a market for European products, as a colony. After the wars of the early 20th Century the situation was reversed and Europe became a market for US production. Trade has ebbed and flowed since.

The only countries that have attempted to take a zero sum approach to trade deficits were Communist!

We know how that worked out.

The industries that are failing in the US, like coal, steel and ICE automotive are from a past generation. Like blacksmiths their market is shrinking and will eventually vanish.

Yes, your last point is a real worry. It must be a nightmare for the US military. They've probably endlessly gamed the various scenarios on the F... Moron ordering launching nukes all over the place. I expect US adversaries such as Iran if attacked with US nukes would release biological weapons from their embassies and consulates in the US.
