I think it was a Labour MP who said "when a posh boy is in trouble, he sacks his servants". I'm expecting Johnson, the worst British Prime Minister in the modern era, to soon be pushing some people out the door.

Commercial fishing ..... the problem is greed. As fish are 'wild' and not owned by any individual, fishermen always want to catch more - they think there are lots of fish , so always want a bigger share. As technology allowed increased catches, all the other fishermen upgrade as well - eventually you run out of fish. This has been a problem for the last hundred years. Scientists can work out a maximum sustainable yield, but the fishermen always lobby the politicians and say it is to small - result - quotas are hardly ever set low enough. It only takes about 5 years of quotas above maximum sustainable yield to destroy a fish stock - and if conservation measures are not enacted soon enough, other species take over the ecological niche, and the stock may never recover. The other species may not even be fish.

It is a classic example of 'The tragedy of the commons'

https://www.investopedia.com/terms/t/tr ... ommons.asp

Here is a graph of the Canadian cod catch, and fall in UK fish catches

https://ourworldindata.org/fish-and-ove ... fish-catch

The only way to conserve fish stocks is by enforcing strict catch regulations - but this is hard as there is competition between many fishing boats, and often many nations, for one fish stock

not trying to portray the great white north as some
kind of utopia, obviously they destroyed their own
cod fishing industry.take decades or never recover

think they serve alaskan pollock in u.s. poor imitations of brit chippers . not close to the same
" tragedy of commons" a very apt analogy here

Some interesting data in rick's link but back to the big news:

There should be an inquiry into the Met's handling of the Downing Street parties. The recent photos to surface make the Met look like political players. Part of Team Johnson but it was Johnson who created this fiasco.

So the Gray report has now officially skewered Johnson:
Scathing report blames Boris Johnson for British government parties during COVID-19 lockdown
https://www.abc.net.au/news/2022-05-25/ ... /101100204
Where does this leave us (in the broadest sense) in our belief in:

- the Westminster system of government

- the credibility of the Metropolitan Police Force.

I reckon this is existential stuff - right up there with Trump's attempt to overthrow the 2020 US presidential election.

The mirror have got hold of photos from ANOTHER party at Downing St (17th Nov) that neither Sue Gray or the Met have even investigated. My question would be how can they have done any investigation and not found out about other parties?
Somebody in the Met must have known, which means they must have been told to stay stum by someone .... who??

- The Met have never been big on prosecuting rape.

System of government: the parliamentary standards need to be addressed. I saw Tobias Ellwood heckled and jeered by his own party today. A decent bloke, he was the chap who tried to save the life of the policeman murdered by a Jihadist outside Parliament. A few weeks ago I saw Caroline Lucas heckled so loudly that no one could hear what she was saying. Tory MPs live in a bubble and haven't a scooby doo (nor care) what the public think of them.

Credibility of the Metropolitan Police: little credibility over the previous 30 years. Not fit for purpose - I can provide examples.

Your witness, your Honour.

The more senior civil servants at the parties should be dismissed. The British system of government seems unable even to do that.

The PM seems unwilling or unable to fire one of the identified offenders.

Simon Case refuses to resign after Sue Gray report hits out at Downing Street leadership

Boris Johnson stands by his most senior official, who informed him before report was published that he would have to be pushed

Britain’s top civil servant was clinging to his job on Wednesday night after being blamed in Sue Gray’s partygate report for overseeing a culture of rule-breaking in Number 10.

Simon Case, the Cabinet Secretary, has refused to resign after the Whitehall enforcer tore into the Downing Street leadership for organising and attending boozy gatherings.

Boris Johnson has decided to stand by his most senior official, who informed him before the Gray report was published that would not quit and would have to be pushed.

Johnson's cynicism knows no bounds. Within twelve hours of dodging the twin-barrels of the Met investigation and Sue Grey report, he huddles with The 1922 Committee and miraculously announces another U-turn. I guess that was the trade-off for keeping his bank benchers onside. This after weeks of rubbishing Labour's calls for exactly that tax. PMQ's will be a hoot next week.

Yes, BoJo changing the ministerial code to save his skin and this is what he wanted to do with respect to the Owen Patterson kerfuffle.
Ministers who knowingly mislead Parliament will still be expected to resign, with the code saying: "It is of paramount importance that ministers give accurate and truthful information to Parliament."
But for the first time, the code has introduced the idea of a "minor" breach and sanctions "which the prime minister may decide to issue in a given case".
Under the new rules, possible sanctions for breaching the code could include a "public apology, remedial action, or removal of ministerial salary for a period".
https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-politics-61607739

This lot have to go, I'm tired of watching them jeer other MPs in the House like a bunch of football hooligans, changing the rules to suit themselves, hiding their Russian money seam. Rayner is right, they are corrupt, a bunch of privileged posh boys thumbing their noses at the rest of us.

Rant over.
