General Discussion of UK Politics
Re: General Discussion of UK Politics
The Aussies have problems with statues of modern Tory politicians too. Some lefties are too keen to damage them. They're going to have big problems with Morrison statues. Given Thatcher's significance, there should be many statues of her around the UK.

Re: General Discussion of UK Politics
There needs to be far more statues of Thatcher around UK. Its no good pretending she didnt exist, kids need to be taught at an early age "If you dont use your vote properly, that's what you will end up with"
Re: General Discussion of UK Politics
I wonder what reaction awaits Johnson statues.

They will all be in the same pose as the "reclining buddha" statues ....... after all he spent all his time in office lying so why change for the statues?
Re: General Discussion of UK Politics
And another Tory MP in the news. Looks like he went all out with "...indecent assault, sexual assault, rape, abuse of position of trust and misconduct in a public office.

Re: General Discussion of UK Politics
As much as it hurts to praise any Tory MP, I have to say that as my local MP he had a reputation of being able to sort problems for his constituants by cutting through red tape and getting jobsworths to rethink their position on local issues.
When my mum needed to be looked after 24/7 it was Rosindell that fought on behalf of my dad to get him a "carers allowance" that enabled him to look after her in their house rather than have her put in a home

Re: General Discussion of UK Politics
The Tories don't appear to be a party of law and order. More like a party of lawbreakers with Arthur Daley behind the big desk at number 10.

Re: General Discussion of UK Politics
On the other side of the world, I'd describe my local MP as a bit woke and very contemporary. He's perhaps only 5 years older than Prince William and less than half our head of state's age.

What a joke. Arthur Daley cops only one £50 fine. The Met weren't interested in going against the big boys. It's disgraceful.

Re: General Discussion of UK Politics
Two bi-elections coming up due to Tory incumbents resigning after being either sexually perverted or overactive. High probability of a third one with the recent charging of an as yet unidentified MP with serious sex offenses. Good chance the Tories will lose a couple of them.
Sue Grey wants to name names and publish photographs in her report on 'Partygate' but has a meeting with Johnson first. This is probably to ensure that his current exercise in rearranging the deckchairs on HMS Downing Street won't need a mulligan or two.
Canada has just added Alexander Lebedev to their list of Russian oligarchs facing sanctions. The UK government hasn't taken the same action as his son Evgeny Lebedev is a Tory peer thanks to Johnson.

who can explain it ? did the u.k. impose a 35% tariff on russian whitefish imports in the end ? i can't find an answer. vegetable oil price spike ?
non-sustainable fishing practices ? why the sudden exorbitant prices? gaffing patrons at chippers
Re: General Discussion of UK Politics
When it comes to British chippers, they've been on borrowed time for a while. About a dozen years ago, they were few and far between compared with 20 years previous as they'd priced themselves out of being the traditional fast-food alternative. Locally caught cod and haddock were becoming scarce as stocks became depleted and EU directives forced the British fishing fleets that had been forsaken by both Labour and Conservative governments, to either go further or or land their catch at foreign ports. They had some sort or renaissance in the past five years, probably fueled by sourcing their fish from what has ultimately proven to be another unsustainable source.pepesgrill wrote: ↑May 22, 2022, 9:12 amwho can explain it ? did the u.k. impose a 35% tariff on russian whitefish imports in the end ? i can't find an answer. vegetable oil price spike ?

Re: General Discussion of UK Politics
i wasn't aware canada had a similar problem in
the 90s. supertrawlers w/ hightech gear severely
depleting stock. they had to impose a moratorium
on atlantic cod fishing. as industry collapsed. in
north sea, it must be 10x more difficult regulate
