Travelling back and forth in a nice warm train was a far better option than trying to find somewhere to sit for 3 or 4 hours on a cold platform out of the wind as most (not all) waiting rooms were shut and locked after midnight to prevent vandalism. Those that were open had the heating off by that time.
We had access to the "working timetables" so could plan well in advance. The morning train from Leeds to Euston for instance arrived in the platform about 40 mins before its departure and the power was switched on to warm the carriages whilst the driver/guard went to the staff room for a cuppa. When you got used to it you got plenty of sleep on trains and attending football/hockey or beer festivals in Manchester/York/Newcastle or Sheffield after a days work in London was quite common for many of us
So it was a perk for you exalted rail staff who could just jump on trains to keep warm while the lumpen masses had to sit in "Cold Platforms" before the usually late trains arrived. Good to know it was not just work related meetings you had to endure these hardships for but "attending football/hockey or beer festivals in Manchester/York/Newcastle or Sheffield after a days work" Jeez life must have been hard.

Joe public had exactly the same possibilities as we did ...... as witnessed by the fact that there were often rail "cranks" on the trains trying to get a rare bit of line done or get milage behind a class of loco.
I'm pretty sure most sports fans would take advantage of the situation. If your team are playing in Leeds and you happen to be in Manchester. and theres a direct train from Manchester to Leeds why wouldnt you go?
Now if you really want good use from a free pass ......
A mate and I went from Romford to Monaco to see Liverpool beat Bayern Munich in the supercup
I also went by train to Budapest/Berlin and Geneva for hockey matches

Bet they run on time!!! Unlike the heap of ships we call our rail network. Ships was a deliberate miss spell. Dont want to go back in the naughty seat.

Statto, it seems the minutiae of your travel allowance(s) can overshadow the 7, or is it 8, or 9 mainly illegal social events held at No 10, during the various lockdowns which impacted on the rest of the general UK population.

Talk about not seeing the woods for the trees.
Yep. The current state of British politics is deplorable. It should even be shameful for a country that has historically been one of the world's most important democracies. Party party will just add to the foreign perception that the current UK government is built on lies.

It isn't really surprising given Johnson's long history of bullshxtting. Like Trump, he isn't even a proper Tory.

One good thing about Johnson is that he walked the streets of Kyev with the Ukrainian leader. Who does Trump seem to support in this conflict? Also, is Trump a monarchist who supports the British Crown or is he a Republican? What about Johnson? What is a proper Tory?

A politician keen on law and order. They also give a lot of weight to business interests. Didn't Johnson once say fxck business? Keen on low levels of taxation. Keen on a strong military and strong international alliances. What has Johnson done to the British military? Pro-trade ... Johnson doesn't measure up at all.

I've seen one well informed commentator on British politics on youtube say that technically Johnson received a criminal conviction but it wouldn't appear on reports if his record is checked.

Is he a social or progressive conservative? How does Trump fit into your definition?

Would you regard Disraeli as a traditional Tory?

He did not "walk the streets of Kyev."

It was a shameful, five minute photo op dreamed up by his back office to bolster the idea that Johnson is the world leader doing the most to help Ukraine. He flew in, shook hands, made some vague promises, took a brief walk outside the safe and secure Zelenskyy sanctuary and flew out again.

They then pitched this absurd notion to the British public via the media just a few hours ahead of his first reckoning with the fact that he broke the UK's laws on assembly during covid restrictions.

Johnson has been proven to have broken the law.

The next step is to prove if he lied to Parliament or not.

Would have thought a quick check of the PMQ tapes would suffice to do that ..... it was in front of millions on TV after all

Thanks GT. Everything most politicians do nowadays is a shameful photo-op. Anyway, he was the only important western leader who got out there and went for a little walk. Of course, he has nothing on your biting commentary.

If I were a cynic, I would suggest he is the only prominent Western leader who feels he is in so much trouble politically that he needed to do the walk to deflect attention from the domestic front. :-k

And now here he is "walking the streets" in India.

His very messy personal life is also continents away from what I expect from a conservative. He's a clown.

Is this a reference to John Profumo, Christine Keeler, Mandy Rice-Davies and the Russian Naval Attache at the Soviet Embassy?

Pay attention FFS.

Looking at the huge voids on the Tory benches as the day progressed in Westminster yesterday they've already had enough of their Master of wiff-waff, deflection, obfuscation and inconsequentially irrelevant verbal grandiloquence. He is damaged goods and leaving him in charge at this time risks this parliament foundering on the rocks of his hubris.

It's looks like Johnson is half out the door. Any thoughts on his successor? The British Tories are a mess. They need to find a spine.
