a French study appears to show smokers are less at risk from the virus, affirming the results of an earlier Chinese study. The data aren’t conclusive – but they’re certainly surprising.

Nicotine may protect smokers against the coronavirus, according to a paper published on Tuesday in the French Academy of Sciences’ Biology Reports. Studying 482 patients hospitalized with Covid-19 in Paris’s Pitié-Salpêtrière hospital, the researchers found just 5 percent were daily smokers – far lower than the 25.4 percent of the French population who smoke daily.

As a smoker for over 50 years , the same thoughts crossed my mind a while ago .
Not the nicotine as such , but as a smoker your constantly made aware of the dangers of smoking every time you pick up a packet of the soldiers of death .
One of those graphic illustrations is the tar that attaches to your lungs .
Could this tar make it harder for the virus to penetrate your lungs , and if so gives you some protection from it ?

I stand corrected , see , its not that difficult to admit when your wrong .
I cant imagine seeing that piece of information on a packet of ciggies anytime soon .
So , cancer it is then .

Are smokers and tobacco users at higher risk of COVID-19 infection?
Smokers are likely to be more vulnerable to COVID-19 as the act of smoking means that fingers (and possibly contaminated cigarettes) are in contact with lips which increases the possibility of transmission of virus from hand to mouth. Smokers may also already have lung disease or reduced lung capacity which would greatly increase risk of serious illness.

Smoking products such as water pipes often involve the sharing of mouth pieces and hoses, which could facilitate the transmission of COVID-19 in communal and social settings.

Conditions that increase oxygen needs or reduce the ability of the body to use it properly will put patients at higher risk of serious lung conditions such as pneumonia.

And very sensible you boys are . Its a terrible addiction , and i wish i never started , but when i did every one was smoking , and it was the cool thing to do . 50 years on and its no longer cool , in fact you are treated like a leper by some .
Reformed smokers are the worse .
Only myself to blame , but it is almost impossible to quit , especially if like me you have no will power , and im pretty sure i will die as a result of some smoking related decease , but as they say ---- happens .
