A little ray of sunshine from New Zealand

Post by tamada » June 17, 2020, 12:28 pm

Following their first +ve cases in 24 days and after what looks like lax supervision or enforcement of the rules in place, the New Zealand PM places the administration of Covid-19 quarantining under the purview of the 'defence force'.

https://www.theguardian.com/world/2020/ ... ine-fiasco

"A woman who stayed at the Novotel Ellerslie in Auckland at the same time as New Zealand’s two new positive Covid-19 cases says she wasn’t made to do a Covid-19 test before she left the hotel.

"The woman says those working at the hotel, which included the Army, Navy, Customs, and Ministry of Health staff, had a stronger focus on keeping Covid-19 out of the hotel than they did on keeping a potential case contained within it.

“They were really pushy on certain rules, if somebody orders food from the outside, it is all wiped down and cleaned, but they are supposed to be protecting New Zealanders from us.”

It seems to me that the military were already running the shambles at the quarantine hotel.

This is not the only case this week of isolation cases breaking the rules
6 people from Melborne were granted exemption to attend a funeral in Hamilton
They did the runner
Police were notified and this lot were put back into isolation
Fortunately they have tested negative so far

This will just make it harder for anyone else to be able to travel for what ever reasons

I think the desperate tourist 'air bridge' and 'bubble' fantasies can be all put to rest now.

An unknown number of people are refusing coronavirus tests after health officials failed to swab them at quarantine facilities.

The Ministry of Health is continuing to track down 2159 people released from a two-week mandatory quarantine without a Covid-19 test, after it declared on June 9 that all people entering New Zealand would be tested twice for the virus.

More than a week after discovering officials had bungled the testing regime, director-general of health Dr Ashley Bloomfield confirmed that health officials had so far found nearly 450 people that appeared to have gone without tests.

Health Minister David Clark, labelled a "dead man walking" by theNational Party on Wednesday, batted away claims he was culpable for the border bungle, instead blaming his Director-General of health.

Jacinda Ardern admits defeat over zero Covid policy as she says delta variant 'hard to shake'

New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern on Monday acknowledged something most other leaders did long ago: her government may never completely get rid of the coronavirus.

And now a musical interlude...

Hubbard is a non-issue here. People don't seem to chat about Hubbard. I don't know whether that's from embarrassment, lack of interest or acceptance. I suspect lack of interest.

We came very close to eliminating it. If the virus was killing say 10% of those infected, we might have had the stamina to manage it. We even had a death today. There's still no Covid in 80% of the country but it's now starting to leak out of Auckland. I think Cindy will get very coercive on vaccinations. I've just started wearing a mask at work. I had an employee not wearing one today but I told her as the Covid numbers go up, there will be a point where she has to mask up.

We had a Maori sheila sworn in as Governor General today:

Image

She has a name that will cause confusion: Dame Cindy Kiro. She might have to be called Maori Cindy and the other one Pakeha Cindy. Or perhaps Dame Cindy and Ordinary or Plain Cindy. So many shielas or Maoris have been GG I've lost count.

It was reported in a local online rag: "Kiro has worked as a public health academic, has served as Children's Commissioner, was a pro vice-chancellor Māori of the University of Auckland, and most recently became chief executive of Te Apārangi – Royal Society of New Zealand. Kiro was born in Whangārei, Northland, in 1958, the eldest of six children. She is of Ngāpuhi, Ngāti Hine, Ngāti Kahu and British descent. She has a level of fluency in te reo Māori."

A Maori, female, former Children's Commissioner. That's bound to impress Ordinary Cindy. Dame Cindy is clearly Ordinary Cindy's selection. No doubt quickly approved by our defacto head of state, Kxng Charles III.

Whoa, you've forgotten about Prince Andrew. He's still holed up in the UK. By the way, we don't want him.

A person died of Covid at home in Auckland today. I understand that's the first person to die from Delta at home in New Zealand and it was our 28th Covid 19 death. The elimination of Covid is still the policy for geographically over 75% of the country. Nearly 80% of people 12 and over have had 2 vaccinations in Auckland. The country is nearly ready to let Covid do its awful thing.

Here's Cindy out leading the drive for vaccinations in the more vaccine hesitant rural parts of the country:

Covid "elimination"? Really?

What's the kiwi's secret weapon then?
