A Scotty from Marketing fan? He might turn up one day as Australia's ambassador to the US. The US needs to be wary of former Aussie politicians. Alexander Downer set off a right stink.

Scott's legacy. A document has just been produced, signed by the then Treasurer in 2016, offering a the NT government a $20mill incentive to sell the Port of Darwin to a company with close links to the Chinese Communist Party.

Awesome. Morrison would recall things like this too. There will be other skeletons. Many long serving politicians will have them.

it's an " accusation" made by albanese. which
doesn't make much sense. as in 2015 a " lease"
was signed with chinese group for use port darwin

essentially it's just a " smear " as scotty was minister of social services? at time. smear tactic

So, was it Abbott or Turnbull?

We will probably never know who was behind it or even if it was a cabinet decision. We do know it was a coalition decision if not directly Scotty's. 20 years down the line the cabinet papers will be released and we may know then.

What we do know, it was a government decision to lease that port and I believe Port Headland in WA. There was widespread disquiet in Australia based on sovereign risk. Selling off the national infrastructure like airports reaped billions to pay off short term government debt, short term measures that then meant government income from those public-owned assets was lost for long periods. Fees, in the hands of the private owners skyrocketed. Sydney Airport is a prime example where fees for landing, parking etc are amongst the highest in the world.

Privatisation in every case I know of, has driven prices up well above CPI, the governments get a short term windfall, the public gets screwed.

The selling or leasing of the port and airports is done by State gov
The fed only has power the power to veto if a reason is found
Just like Vic's Silk road deal

Nope - he was Treasurer in October 2015.

Smear tactic indeed.

A lot of people saw sovereign risk as a reason to block, not $20M to bribe

There are many who disagree with your assessment, Cali:
It is common knowledge that Morrison is despised by many of his colleagues. Recent testimonials from his own side of politics have described him as a ‘liar’, a ‘fraud’, a ‘bully’, a ‘complete psycho’, an ‘autocrat’, a ‘deeply ingrained chauvinist’, an ‘absolute arsehole’ and a ‘horrible, horrible person’, who is ‘volatile, sly and untrustworthy’ and has ‘no moral compass’.
https://sydneyreviewofbooks.com/essay/a ... tten-fish/
You will note, these are takes on Morrison's character from his own side of politics. 🤣

ps for those so inclined, the entire article is worth a read.

The Oz $ was about 74-76c to the USD in March/April this year under the Libs/Nats party. As of today around 69c to the USD as it looks like labor will win govt. Terrible times for the future of OZ. Maybe some exporters could feel happy, I'm not.

This is one very smart campaign

https://www.smh.com.au/politics/federal ... 5aksu.html

Rolled out as a surprise twist to the campaign just a few weeks out from the election. Very, very clever. The coalition will have trouble responding in such a tight timeframe, they will try, but will look at as 'us too', nobody will be fooled.

Interesting. I'd overlooked Albanese becoming the first non-Anglo-Celtic prime minister.

Have inter-generational equity issues been popping up? In NZ young people are totally screwed by the economic and tax systems. It's outrageous but the young don't vote as much as the oldies.

Australia has been a multicultural nation for many years with heaps of paper Aussies and first generation citizens raising above their ethnicity to make australia great.
There’s no need to play the ethnic card as Aussies don’t care and need not be celebrated. It’s just normal these days.
Cheap low shot by labor.
