Red Lotus Festival, Kumphawaphi

Post by parrot » January 4, 2013, 7:59 pm

The annual Red Lotus Festival kicks off 11-13 Jan in Kumphawaphi.

According to the website, the flowers should be in bloom through Feb.

Although Nonghan Lake in Kumphawaphi boasts 20,000+ acres of water and millions of red lotus flowers, I came across this small pond off the southwestern ring road (on the opposite side of Maliwan), tucked less than 100 meters off the road. Unfortunately, there was quite a bit of trash in the area, but once you get past the trash, the view of the pond was worth the trouble.

The wife and I stopped by there a couple of weeks ago and found that the lake was no where as beautiful as last year. As stated by FrazeeDK, the lake level is quite low and the flowering lotus plants were sparce. We had planned to take visitors there, as in the past, but have decided not to this year. Hopefully, next season the lake will return to it's normal, beautiful state.

Had a look last week and found the lake was very low and no flowers . They were doing alot of building (road) ,dredging and was in quite a mess. Cant see it improving much due to the low water level. Shame as went there last year and it was excellent.

Gary, try again between Jan/March, that is when Talay Bua Daeng looks its best.

When you say 7.30, is that the time you left Udon or the time you need to be at the lake ?
Thanks
I was born with nothing and still have most of it left
