I have seen the posts on the Sabai Sabai fishing park. While I enjoy catching catfish and/or tilapia, occasionally I just want to fly fish and not catch anything, or at least that is generally what happens to me. I have seen some lakes/bodies of water on the Udon Thani map and was wondering whether I could go fishing at these or somewhere else in Udon Thani? It doesn’t have to be a fishing park, just somewhere with some shade.

Cannot fish the public park lakes. Their are some reservoirs but a bit out of town. To find out about fishing parks, try Udon-news.com, although info is a bit out of date. Other large lakes - have to ask locals about them.

nowadays I regularly fish at 17.25'05.44/102.25'16.34 at Ban Don Poo; 80 baht a rod; 150 for three rods. The next four I fished for free. Those are: 17.27'01.57/102.52'36.20 and 17.25'48.18/102.49'12.75 and 17.25'54.76/102.50'35.05 and 17.26'17.46/102.51'29.68 And the klong (river) through Sam praow I also fished at the next spots: 17.27'36.21/102.52;57.30 and 17.27'37.72/102.54'24.79.
I also frequented 17.26'46.03/102.51'07.29 and 17.25'54.50/102.49'50.76. The last two, eg. baaw Cha Toei and Baaw Boy, are 50 baht a rod. The first mentioned is take all for free; the second mentioned is a very small pond and for 50 baht you have two kg free. It is recently changed into a tournament pond, so the big cat fishes are "catch and release" the rest two kg free; and 60 baht a kg for the surplus. The next pond is opposite Baw Boy , is also a tournament pond and if I want to feel the pull of big cat fishes ( Pla Sawaay) I go there to play a little. Here it costs 80 baht a rod and also two kg free. But there are so many giant catfishes here that it is very difficult to get something else on the line. But just for the fun of it I will go here occasionally to "play" a while with a 5 to 15 kg catfish. There are some big tilapias , and other species here too. So you can try to outsmart the catfishes. Is also a fun game to play. Like trying very close to the shore and bait that you hope they, the cat fishes do not like.
Do not expect to catch a lot of fish in al, those ponds and the bigger ones are very "smart'. Nowadays(once or twice a week) I only go to the very first 1 I mentioned, trying to outsmart the larger fish in there. But I always end up with a lot of small pla nins (tilapias) But In the three years I go there I've had some big ones (>= 2 - 5kg ) Pla Nin, pla Yissok, pla nuan chan, pla sawaay, pla shon, pla tjien or pla Dtapian and two or three times a 3kg real carp = pla Nai. I personally like this pond and Cha Toei because the water is not of a murky yellowish color,; like all the rest except for the natural ponds and the river.

Thank you for the fishing coordinates. In the USA you would be lucky to get the name of a lake/or other body of water, much less the coordinates. I have tried some of the catfish/tilapia fishing on tournament ponds or non-tournament ponds in the southern portion of Udon Thani province. Usually, when we go it is a family affair, which has some good points. I may try your recommended baaw Cha Toei or baaw Boy later this month. However, I still would like to find a natural pond somewhere near the ring road for a relaxing morning, sans family. Thanks again.

There are a few pretty good fishing shops around town Mick that should give you a very good idea of what the locals use.
1 in the Night Market, pretty near the 7/11 on the corner - just walk inside the NM from 7/11 & then head towards BKK Hospital.
Another at the Nong Sim end of the Adunllayadet Road - on the right hand side coming from town.
In general any Thais that I have fished with tend to like to use these type of bait holders, but multi hooked.
Usual bait in them was bread - often with 'flavours' added from small bottles from the fishing shops.
I have used floats & ledgers (with about equal joy & despair
) & tried meat, fish & even pineapple on the hook..
Tried spinning for 1 absolutely fishless day, but it might have worked on another day, in another location!!!

Tried feeder with the usual paste mix and a hook with worm. Also tried just the worm and weight on the bottom. As there were so many fish both methods worked.
He has Planine & Catfish.
Although it's a very tidy place you should take boots with you and some refreshments.
Well worth a visit!
