Found a great program or way of doing something??
Please share here & let others try.

I will kick off with an addition to anyone that is running any of the Linux Operating systems.

Cairo-Dock

It is a free animated 'menu bar' that sits on the bottom (or elsewhere if you prefer) of the desktop.
Available here..

& a picture of what it looks like in real life..

For windows users, KatMouse. It's a small utility that allows you to use the scroll wheel on your mouse to scroll all windows.

Handy little gadget.

For Mac users, when you run into trouble playing .wmv or HD mpeg files, try VLC. It is open source and works...it plays wmv, mts and mt2s on my Mac.

There is even an APP on Android (Unified Remote) that allows you to use your Android phone as a 'remote' for a film running on VLC on a Windows PC.... :D :D

I have never used the Windows/Android parts of VLC, so could not speak as to whether they work or not. I am glad to hear that they work well also. :)

Not really a 'computer tip', but if you have a music library and want to rip your own ring tones for your phone from it, you might try Audacity, a free open source audio editor. I am easily able to cut parts of songs, paste them together, etc., then output them as an mp3 for import into my Blackberry for assignment as a ringtone.

This also works on Nokia, but is much harder due to Nokia not supporting the Mac from their control software. :( One reason I no longer have a Nokia. I think basically any modern phone has the ability to assign an mp3 as a ringtone, so this should work for just about everyone. Why pay $$$ for a ringtone from a song you've already paid for? It just makes the music companies happy.

If your as paranoid about backing up your data files as I am there is a 'payware' utility I use daily called FolderMatch by Salty Brine Software, see here.
http://www.foldermatch.com/index.htm

Been using it since 2005, then it retailed for about USD$20.00 and I see now it's only $25 (on special) --- Worth every cent and more. =D>
Sent from my 1977 Apple II using 2 Heinz bake bean cans and piano wire!
